Top 10 Spin-Ups from 2019-20: #5 Getting A Win in The First Ever Game

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. - The 2019-20 school year provided plenty of highlights on the court, the fields and the mat.

CentenaryCyclones.com polled members of the coaching and athletics staff for their top 10 moments from the last school year. Continuing through June on Tuesdays and Thursdays, the top 10 will be unveiled.

Today CentenaryCyclones.com moves into the top five with a win for the field hockey team in their first ever game.

On November 14, 2018, the Centenary University Athletic Department announced that it would start sponsoring field hockey as an NCAA sponsored sport.

On August 31, 2019, the Cyclone field hockey team featuring 11 freshmen and head coach Stephen Speirs took the field for their first game at Bryn Athyn.

The Cyclones wasted little time in getting on the board as freshman Isabella Tracy scored just 4:02 into the game.

Bryn Athyn tied the game at 1-1 in the first period.

Freshman Jordan Vandermark's goal at 19:03 gave the Cyclones a 2-1 lead and an advantage they would not relinquish.

Centenary carried that 2-1 lead into the halftime break.

The visiting Cyclones went on to score three more times in the second half to secure a 5-1 win. Freshmen Megan Baker and Lucienne Wolfson (two goals) scored in the second stanza for Centenary.

Senior Dayna Wich made a defensive save in the contest while freshmen Sydnie Bogan and Jenyfer Pereira combined to make six save in goal.

CentenaryCyclones.com asked coach Speirs to reflect back on that game: "Our Cyclone field hockey athletes worked hard during the preseason and that hard work payed off for the inaugural squad during our opening game at Bryn Athyn," said Speirs. "As a newly established team, not knowing how we would compare to other teams in the conference we were nervous and a bit anxious but more importantly we were excited and committed to playing our best."

"The excitement and commitment shared by this team quickly proved to be the formula that created the determination and confidence to win," added Speirs. "We knew after this first win, the Centenary Cyclones were going to be a contender in our first season. It was a remarkable experience that we will not forget."
