HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. - The 2019-20 school year provided plenty of highlights on the court, the fields and the mat.Â
CentenaryCyclones.com polled members of the coaching and athletics staff for their top 10 moments from the last school year. Continuing through June on Tuesdays and Thursdays, the top 10 will be unveiled.
Today CentenaryCyclones.com moves to number six as a total team effort led to a playoff win for the women's basketball team.
Heading into their Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) first round playoff game at No. 4 Clarks Summit on Feb. 24, the Centenary women's basketball team was looking for its first conference playoff win since 2009-10.
The Cyclones knew it was going to take a balanced attack to beat a Defenders squad that had defeated them during both games of the regular season.
Clarks Summit jumped out to an early 18-13 advantage after the first period of play.
Trailing 28-25, the Cyclones went on a 6-0 run that gave the visitors a lead they would not relinquish.
Freshman
Carmen Escano had eight first half points while sophomore
Taylor Bossert knocked down three three-pointers in the second quarter as Centenary took a 38-33 lead at the break.
The two teams continued to battle throughout the second half as Centenary went 8-for-12 from the foul line in the final 40 seconds to secure the 78-72 win.
Escano finished with 18 points and 12 rebounds and Bossert added 18 points to lead a group of five Cyclones in double figures in the game. Also scoring in double figures were sophomore
Victoria Jacobs (11 points), freshman
Janne Rowan (10 points) and freshman
Kayla Burnett (15 points).
Centenary won its first conference playoff game since 2009-10.
CentenaryCyclones.com asked head coach
Rose Haller for her thoughts on that win: "The playoff win over Summit was a team victory and a big step forward for this young team to start believing in their ability to achieve big things," said Haller.
