Balanced Attack Leads Women's Basketball to 78-72 Win at No. 4 Clarks Summit

CLARKS SUMMIT, Pa. – Five players scored in double figures to lead the No. 5 Centenary University women's basketball team to a 78-72 win at No. 4 Clarks Summit University in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Tournament First Round action on Monday night. It's the first CSAC Tournament win for the Cyclones since the 2009-10 season.

"Tonight, was a team victory," said head coach Rose Haller. "They all did their jobs. They played as hard as they could. Win or lose we can't ask for more than that but it sure was nice to win."

The Cyclones scored the first basket of the day on a jumper from freshman Carmen Escano at 9:18.

Clarks Summit responded by scoring 10 of the next 14 points and took a 10-6 lead with 7:05 remaining in the period. Randie Traxler scored half of the Defenders' points during that stretch.

A pair of three-pointers from Alison Aten gave Clarks Summit an 18-11 lead with 2:41 showing on the clock.

A late lay-up from freshman Kayla Burnett made it an 18-13 game after one period of play.

Each team scored seven points in the first three minutes of the second quarter and Clarks Summit led 25-20 with 7:17 to go until the half.

A triple from sophomore Taylor Bossert at 5:36 tied the game at 25-25.

Aten knocked down a three-pointer at 5:24, which gave the home team a 28-25 edge.

Centenary scored the next six points in the game and took a 31-28 lead with 3:53 showing on the clock.

A lay-up from Traxler at 2:29 pulled the Defenders within one, 31-30.

The Cyclones closed the second quarter on a 7-3 run and took a 38-33 lead at the break.

After Clarks Summit scored the first bucket of the third quarter, Centenary went on a 14-2 run and pushed its lead to 52-37 with 5:48 to go in the period. Escano, Bossert and freshman Janne Rowan all scored four points during that stretch.

The Cyclones and Defenders traded points on each end of the court as a traditional three-point play from sophomore Victoria Jacobs at 1:03 gave the visitors a 57-47 lead.

Clarks Summit got a three-pointer in the final 10 seconds, but the Cyclones led 57-50 at the end of the third period.

A lay-up from Escano at 7:05 of the fourth quarter allowed Centenary to take a 59-52 lead.

Back-to-back buckets from Burnett pushed the Cyclones' advantage to 65-53 with 3:48 to go in the game.

A pair of free throws from Bossert at 2:08 gave Centenary a 68-53 lead.

Clarks Summit scored 11 of the next 13 points and cut the Cyclones' lead to 70-64 with 48 seconds to go in the game. Elizabeth Singleton scored eight points in that scoring spurt.

The Cyclones went 8-for-12 from the foul line in the final 40 seconds to hold off the Defenders and secure the 78-72 win.

Centenary shot 50 percent from the field in the game and made 21-of-28 chances from the foul line. Clarks Summit posted a 41.3 field goal percentage and was 7-for-13 from the foul line. Both teams pulled down 36 rebounds in the game.

Escano led the Cyclones in the game as she contributed 18 points and 12 rebounds. It was the freshman's third straight double-double and seventh of the season. Bossert added 18 points and four rebounds.

Jacobs tallied 11 for the Cyclones while Rowan posted 10 points and seven rebounds. Burnett came off the bench to added 15 points and four assists.

Singleton led Clarks Summit with 20 points and seven assists.

The Cyclones are back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 26 when they travel to No. 1 Keystone for the CSAC Semifinals.
