Former MLB Pitcher Cole Kimball Returns to Centenary to Inspire Cyclones

The Centenary Cyclones baseball program received a special visitor this week when one of its most decorated alumni. Former Major League pitcher Cole Kimball returned to campus to spend time with the current team. His visit served not only as an opportunity for players to learn from someone who has reached the highest level of the game, but also as a powerful step in strengthening Centenary Athletics' connection with its alumni.

Kimball's legacy at Centenary is one still remembered by fans, teammates, and coaches alike. A workhorse on the mound, he helped guide the Cyclones to multiple NCAA Division III World Series appearances during the early-2000s. With a fastball that overpowered hitters and a fierce competitive spirit, Kimball quickly established himself as one of the most dominant pitchers in program history. His success elevated Centenary baseball's reputation nationally, putting the Cyclones firmly on the map in the Division III landscape.

Following his standout collegiate career, Kimball was selected in the 2006 MLB Draft by the Washington Nationals. After progressing through the minor leagues, he made his Major League debut on May 14, 2011, against the Florida Marlins. That season, Kimball appeared in 12 games for the Nationals, posting an impressive 1.93 ERA across 14 innings of relief work. He struck out 11 batters and did not allow a home run, showcasing the same fearless style that made him a star in Hackettstown. His mid-to-upper 90s fastball and sharp breaking pitches earned him a reputation as a reliable late-inning option for Washington's bullpen.

Unfortunately, Kimball's MLB career was cut short due to a shoulder injury that required surgery, limiting his time on the mound. Despite the setback, his rise from Division III baseball to the Major Leagues remains a rare and remarkable achievement, one that continues to inspire the Centenary community.

Speaking with the current team, Kimball shared stories from his days as a Cyclone, his journey through the minors, and the challenges of pitching in the majors. He emphasized the importance of preparation, resilience, and staying connected to the roots of one's athletic journey.

For Centenary Athletics, Kimball's return was more than a homecoming it was a sign of growth in building a lasting bridge between alumni and the current generation of Cyclones. His presence reinforced the idea that Centenary athletes, regardless of division or size, can compete with the best and even reach the pinnacle of professional sports.

As the current Cyclones prepare for their upcoming season, they'll now carry with them the words, wisdom, and example of one of their own, Cole Kimball, a Centenary legend who made it all the way to the big leagues.
