The historic postseason run for the Centenary University baseball team came to an end on Sunday afternoon as the Cyclones fell to the Saints, 15-9, in the decisive Game 2 of the Atlantic East Championship.
Despite the outcome, Centenary's offense once again showcased the firepower that carried the program through a record-breaking season and an unforgettable playoff run.
Leading the charge was
Dominick Chiego, who continued his sensational season at the plate with a dominant 4-for-6 performance, blasting a home run and driving in three runs. Chiego's offensive production throughout the spring has rewritten the Centenary record books and cemented his place among the program's all-time greats.
Derek DePace added another strong showing offensively, going 3-for-4 on the day, while
Nick Santacross delivered in key moments with a 3-for-5 effort and three RBI of his own.
While the championship result did not fall Centenary's way, the Cyclones accomplished more this season in the Atlantic East Conference, than any team in program history. Under the leadership of Head Coach
Andrew Romanella and his staff, the Cyclones became the first team in school history to host the Atlantic East Championship Tournament. The program also secured its first-ever Atlantic East playoff victory, and then added two more during an incredible stretch that saw Centenary battle through the bracket to win three games in four days.
The Cyclones' resilience, toughness, and belief in one another were on full display throughout the postseason, as the team continually answered adversity with gritty performances and explosive offensive outings.
Though the season ended one game short of a conference title, Coach Romanella, his staff, the senior class, and every player in the dugout have plenty to be proud of. This year's team not only raised the standard for Centenary baseball but also laid the foundation for what promises to be a bright future for the program.Â
