ITHACA, N.Y. – Freshman
Ryan Anderson won the 149-pound weight class to highlight the day two action for the Centenary University wrestling team at the NCAA Mideast Regional Championship hosted by Ithaca College.
With the win, Anderson punched his ticket to the NCAA National Championship Meet which will be held in Iowa on March 13-14. It marks the 11th straight year that the Cyclones have had at least one national qualifier.
All eight Cyclones who competed on day two of the tournament placed among the top eight in their respective weight classes and are considered NCAA All-Region Wrestlers. Centenary finished sixth in the field of 18 teams after posting 93.5 points over the two days.
"It was an emotional rollercoaster weekend, with a lot of ups, and downs," said head coach
John Garriques. "The best part about this team is we return seven NCAA All-Regional Student-Athletes next year. I've been saying all year we're young, but talented. Most of the things we need to work on is mental preparation and wrestling to perform, rather then wrestling to not lose. I'm extremely proud of the way the guys battled this weekend, and cant wait for the NCAA's."
In the semifinals, Anderson earned a win by a 7-0 decision while taking on
Anthony Gagliano of TCNJ. It was the freshman's second win of the season over Gagliano. The championship bout proved to be a battle between Anderson and
Ben Brisman of Ithaca. The riding time point proved to be the difference maker as Anderson claimed the 1-0 victory. Anderson is now 30-3 on the season for the Cyclones.
Junior
Kenny Long secured a fourth-place finish at 184-pounds for the Cyclones. Long suffered a tough 8-2 decision versus
Chibueze Chukwuezi of Ithaca to start day two. He bounced back with an 11-1 major decision victory versus
Kyle Schaeffer of Ursinus. Long took
Jimmy Fratantoni of Muhlenberg down to the wire in the third-place bout before falling. An escape and a takedown in the third period allowed Fratantoni to edge Long, 4-2.
Sophomore
Stanley Wojdylak battled for a fifth-place finish at 157-pounds in his first appearance at regionals. After suffering a tough loss to
Kaidon Winters of RIT, Wojdylak fell to
