Scranton, PA – The Centenary baseball team delivered a statement win on Friday afternoon, defeating Marywood 6–2 on the road to move into sole possession of first place in
the
AEC standings.
The Cyclones set the tone early, scoring two runs in the second inning behind RBI singles from Myles Castillo and Joseph Frei. Centenary added three more in the third, highlighted by a sacrifice fly from Cole Schulberg, an RBI single from Chris Clark, and another run-producing sac fly from Simeon Reed to build a 5–0 advantage.
Centenary continued to apply pressure in the fourth, extending the lead to 6–0 on a sacrifice fly from Blake Heitzman. The early offensive surge proved to be more than enough support for the pitching staff.
On the mound, Anthony Spungin earned the win with a solid five-inning outing, allowing two runs while working through traffic. The bullpen was dominant the rest of the way, as Anthony Fraser tossed three scoreless innings before Aiden Gerena and Adam Yarrison combined to close out the final frames and secure the victory.
Offensively, Chris Clark, Dominick Chiego and Mike DeSena each recorded two hits, while Castillo, Frei, and Heitzman all drove in runs as part of a balanced attack that produced 10 hits.
With the win, the Cyclones move to 12–16 overall and take control atop the conference standings, continuing their strong push in AEC play. Games 2 and 3 of the series will be played tomorrow in Hackettstown.
