The Centenary University Women's Soccer team faced a challenging start to the 2025 season, falling 3-0 to William Patterson University on Friday night in their season opener. Despite playing most of the game on defense, the Cyclones showed resilience and determination, and while they were unable to secure a goal, there were some bright spots to take away from the match.
From the opening whistle, Centenary was under pressure, as William Patterson controlled much of the possession and took advantage of their offensive opportunities. The Pioneers wasted no time, scoring early and building on their lead throughout the match.
Senior goalkeeper Emma Ferfecki put on an impressive display in net for the Cyclones, finishing the game with 9 saves, several of which were point-blank stops. Despite the constant barrage of shots from William Patterson, Ferfecki's performance kept the Cyclones in the game and gave the defense a chance to regroup.
On the other end of the field, the Centenary offense was limited, but still managed to make their presence felt. Freshman forward Elizabeth Fogarty was the standout for the Cyclones, recording two shots on goal in her collegiate debut. Although neither of Fogarty's attempts found the back of the net, she demonstrated the skill and poise that the Cyclones will need going forward. Fellow Cyclones Ashley Fogarty and Jenna Magrino also added a shot on goal each, offering a glimmer of offensive promise amid the struggles.
As the game wore on, it was clear that the Centenary women had their hands full with a tough, well-organized opponent, but they never lost their competitive edge. The Cyclones will need to build on this opening game, learning from the defensive lapses while continuing to develop their offensive cohesion in the weeks to come. The Cyclones are back in action this Wednesday at Cairn University, opening kickoff is scheduled for 3pm.
