ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Three wrestlers advanced to the semifinals to highlight the day one action for the Centenary University wrestling team at the NCAA Mideast Regional Tournament hosted by Elizabethtown on Saturday.
Seniors
Jacy Jones and
Cameron Bruffy along with sophomore
Xavier Pena all advanced to the semifinals while the Cyclones placed 8th in the field of 20 with 41 points.
In addition sophomore
Keevon Berry is still alive in the consolation bracket at 197-pounds.
On to the Semifinals:
Jones, who entered the tournament ranked fourth in the region at 133-pounds, went 2-0 on the day to punch his ticket to the semifinals. The senior started his day with a 6-0 decision over
Elijah Moshenek of Alfred State. After a scoreless first period, Jones scored three in each of the second and third periods for the win. He followed that up with a third period fall while taking on
Matthew Murawski of Scranton. Murawski was ranked just ahead of Jones in the regional rankings.
Jones will face
Jayden Cardenas of SUNY Cortland in the semifinals.
Pena went 2-0 on the day at 141-pounds to make it to the semifinals. Pena started his day with a fall in 4:13 versus
CJ Walz of Oswego State. Pena then battled
Eli Sims of Brockport, who was ranked fourth in the regional rankings. Pena recorded a reversal with 29 seconds left in the third period to secure the 2-1 decision.
Pena will battle
Travis Jones of Ithaca in the semifinals. Jones is ranked second in the region.
Bruffy posted a 3-0 mark at 149-pounds as he battled from the preliminary bracket to earn his spot in the semifinals. The senior started his day with an 8-3 decision over
Jack Albin of Johns Hopkins. Bruffy then secured a 3-0 decision over
Shane Strausser of Elizabethtown. He then punched his ticket for the semifinals with an 8-4 decision over
Mike Glynn of RIT, who was ranked fourth in the region.
Bruffy will face
Chandler Merwin of SUNY Cortland the top ranked wrestler in the region, in the semifinals.
Still Going:
Berry battled for a 2-1 record to stay alive in the consolation bracket at 197-pounds. After falling in his opening match, Berry rebounded with an 11-8 decision over
Tyler Phenegar of Elizabethtown. The early 4-1 lead after one period proved crucial for Berry in this one as the two wrestlers matched each other point-for-point in the second and third periods. He followed that up with a 5-1 decision over
Anthony Cascen of Oswego State.
Berry will take on
Jaedyn Harris on McDaniel in his first match on Sunday.
Other Action:
Highlighting the other action for the Cyclones was junior
Perry Maio (157-pounds) and senior
Haakon Mathewson (174-pounds) each picking up two wins before being eliminated from the tournament.
Maio earned a 2-0 decision over
Austin Reed of Brockport, thanks to a first period takedown. He also recorded a tech fall, 19-2 over
Logan Ledebohm of Penn Tech.
Mathewson recorded a win by fall in 46 seconds versus
Adrian Rosario-Beato of Ithaca. He also had a win by major decision versus
Tyler Bailey of New Jersey City.
The Cyclones who advanced from day one will wrap up regional action on Sunday, Feb. 27 starting at 11 a.m. A top three finish in the weight class will allow the wrestlers to earn National Qualifier status.
