Wrestling Turns in Strong Showing at Mid-Winter Classic

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Haakon Mathewson, Jacy Jones, Xavier Pena and Cameron Bruffy all won four matches to highlight a strong showing by the Centenary University wrestling team at the Mid-Winter Classic hosted by Penn Tech College on Saturday.

Mathewson picked up a win over #13 Jason Geyer from NYU as one of his four wins.

Centenary went 3-1 on the day as the Cyclones picked up wins over Rhode Island (29-20), Elizabethtown (25-18) and Thaddeus Stevens Tech (47-6). The only loss of the day came in a hard fought battle to No. 12 NYU (27-19).

Rhode Island Recap (Centenary Won 29-20)
Rhode Island took an early lead in this contest with a win at 125-pounds. The Cyclones responded with victories in each of the next three weight classes and took a 14-6 advantage. Highlighting that stretch was a tech fall win from Bruffy at 149-pounds.

Rhode Island used wins at 157 and 165 pounds to take the lead back, 15-14.

Centenary won three of the final four weight classes to secure the 29-20 win. Mathewson recorded a fall in 3:21 to pick up the win at 174-pounds while Justin Hopman had a win by decision at 184-pounds.

Elizabethtown Recap (Centenary Won 25-18)
Trailing 6-0 in this match, the Cyclones once again ripped off three straight wins (133, 141, 149) and took a 12-6 lead in the contest. Pena had a win by tech fall at 141 pounds while Jones added a win by major decision at 133-pounds.

The Blue Jays bounced back and behind wins at 157 and 165-pounds tied the match at 12-12.

Mathewson gave the Cyclones the lead back with a win by major decision at 174-pounds. Hopman followed that up with a win by fall at 184-pounds and Keevon Berry had a win by decision at 197-pounds to help secure the dual.

No. 12 NYU Recap (Violets Won 27-19)
The Cyclones battled hard against a tough NYU squad that featured four wrestlers ranked in the latest NWCA rankings.

Centenary opened up a 13-6 lead in the dual as Jones, Pena and Bruffy all picked up their third win of the day. Jones got his win by fall, Pena recorded his victory by major decision and Bruffy registered his by decision.

NYU grabbed a 17-13 lead with wins at 157 and 165 pounds.

Mathewson then picked up a big win over Geyer at 174-pounds. Mathewson trailed in the bout but was able to pick up the third period fall.

Unfortunately NYU won the final three weight classes to secure the 27-19 win.

Thaddeus Stevens Recap (Centenary Won 47-6)
The Cyclones dominated the action in their final dual. Centenary picked up wins by forfeit at 133, 141, 149, 184 and 197 pounds.

Perry Maio (157-pounds) and Adrian Pietri (165-pounds) both picked up wins by fall.

Mathewson picked up his fourth win of the day by tech fall at 174-pounds.

The Cyclones will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 22 when they host Hunter at 2 p.m.
