Mulligan and Hopman Lead Wrestling at ESU Open

STROUDSBURG, Pa. – Led by strong performances from seniors Kevin Mulligan and Justin Hopman, the Centenary University wrestling team earned a ninth-place finish at the East Stroudsburg Open on Sunday.

Mulligan turned in a strong performance to claim a second-place finish at 285-pounds. He opened his day with a win by fall in 3:19 versus Timothy Nagosky of Long Island University. Mulligan followed that up with a win by tech fall (16-0) over Rutgers' Marcus Estevez.

Mulligan then posted back-to-back wins by decision (6-0 vs. Kade Carlson of Army and 2-0 vs. Bishop McCoy of Millersville). Mulligan then dropped a hard-fought 3-1 decision to Niccolo Colucci of Rutgers.

Hopman battled his way out of the consolation bracket to secure a fifth-place finish at 184-pounds. The senior dropped his first bout of the day by fall but bounced back with four straight wins. He got a win by fall in 1:10 versus Tyler Fisher of Kutztown. Hopman then defeated teammate Aaron Llanas by major decision, 17-5. He advanced via a medical forfeit and a no contest.

In the fifth-place bout, Hopman battled to overtime and secured a 9-7 decision over Josh Stillings of Drexel.

Seven other Cyclones recorded a win on the day:
  • At 125-pounds, freshman Garrett Spychala had a win by decision (9-2) over Justin Pezoldt of East Stroudsburg.
  • Senior Jacy Jones got a win by forfeit in his opening match at 133-pounds.
  • At 141-pounds, sophomore Xavier Pena recorded a major decision victory (13-2) over Zach Lewis of East Stroudsburg.
  • Junior Perry Maio picked up a win by fall in 2:18 over Charles Tisby of Ferrum at 157-pounds.
  • Senior Haakon Mathewson posted a win by decision (6-5) versus Thomas DiGennaro of Long Island.
  • At 184-pounds, freshman Angelo Piazza had a win by decision (3-1) over Declan Griffin from the United States Military Academy Preparatory School.
  • Sophomore Keevon Berry had a win by decision at 197-pounds. He defeated Seth Hunsinger of Kutztown by a 12-5 score.
