HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – After leading the Centenary University men's basketball to the top seed in the playoffs, the Cyclones were well honored as the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) released its end of the year awards voted on by the league's head coaches.
Junior guard
Chris LaBelle was named the CSAC Player of the Year while freshman forward
D'Angelo Blackmond was named the CSAC Rookie of the Year.
In addition, LaBelle was a First Team All-CSAC honoree. Fifth-year forward
Tom Weiler and sophomore forward
Billy Veras took home Second Team All-CSAC accolades. Sophomore guard
Bryce Falk was selected to the CSAC Sportsmanship Squad.
LaBelle becomes the first Cyclone to take home CSAC Player of the Year honors after a record-breaking junior season. It also marked the second straight year that he earned first team accolades. The junior guard averaged a CSAC best, 22.3 points per game and broke six records in the process. This season he set the school record for single-game points (45), single-game free throws made (18), single-game assists (12), single-season free throws made (187) and career free throws made (356). He also broke the CSAC record for single-season free throws made. He recorded a triple-double in the Cyclones' home win over Keystone and has two other double-doubles. LaBelle has dished out 124 assists this season, which ranks second in single-season history at Centenary. He has pulled down at least one rebound in every game this year and is averaging 5.7 rebounds per game.
For the second straight season and third time overall, the Cyclones have the CSAC Rookie of the Year. Blackmond is averaging 11.5 points per game and ranks third on the team while pulling down 7.8 rebounds per game. He has scored in double figures in 12 games, including the last seven straight games. Blackmond scored a season-high 17 points against Saint Elizabeth and later matched that mark against Bryn Athyn. He has recorded double-digit rebounds in five games and has three double-doubles to his credit. Blackmond is shooting 53.2% from the field and has made 43-of-62 chances from the foul line. He also has 16 assists, 12 blocks and 11 steals on the season.
Weiler takes home all-conference honors for the second straight year after being an honorable mention selection last year. He is averaging 11.7 points and a CSAC best 8.2 rebounds per game this season. Weiler has scored in double figures in 12 games and posted a career-high 26 points against Saint Elizabeth. He has four double-doubles this season, including three in the last four games. Weiler pulled down a career-best 16 rebounds versus Bryn Athyn. He is shooting 49.4 percent from the field and has knocked down a team-best 43 three-pointers. Weiler is also contributing 58 assists and 22 steals this season.
Veras earned Second Team All-CSAC accolades for the second straight season after averaging 15 points and 7.9 rebounds per game. He has scored in double figures in 19 games, including the last four straight. Veras scored a season-high 28 points in the regular season finale at Bryn Athyn. He has five games with double digit rebounds and four double-doubles. Veras pulled down a season-high 16 rebounds at SUNY Delhi. Veras is shooting 51% from the field and 52.9% from the foul line. He has 49 assists and a team-high 31 blocks.
Falk made nine appearances in his first season with the Cyclones. He scored a season-high six points in the season opener against Penn State Lehigh Valley and also grabbed a rebound in that contest. Falk contributed three points, a rebound and a steal at Rutgers Newark.
LaBelle, Blackmond and the rest of the Cyclones are back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 26 for the CSAC semifinals. As the top seed, the Cyclones will host No. 4 Wilson at 7 p.m.
