Salisbury, MD– The Centenary Cyclones mounted a ninth-inning comeback attempt but ultimately fell short in a 9–7 loss to Oswego on Sunday afternoon at Williams Stadium in Salisbury Maryland.
Centenary held control for much of the game behind a strong start from Anthony Spungin, who tossed six scoreless innings while allowing just four hits. The Cyclones took a 1–0 lead in the fourth inning when Derek DePace drove in Joseph Frei with a sacrifice bunt. They added two more runs in the fifth as Dominick Chiego was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Frei followed with an RBI single to give Centenary a 3–0 advantage.
Oswego broke the game open in the eighth inning, scoring nine runs to take a 9–3 lead.
Centenary refused to go quietly in the bottom of the ninth. Nick Santacross drew a walk and Chris Clark singled to spark the rally before Dylan Pyle doubled to drive in a run. Nick Friscia followed with an RBI single, and Chiego added another RBI knock to cut the deficit. Blake Heitzman later singled up the middle to bring home another run and pull the Cyclones within two. However, the comeback attempt ended with the tying run on base. Chris Clark led the Cyclones at the plate with a four-hit performance, while Chiego finished with two hits and two RBIs. Centenary totaled 12 hits in the contest but could not overcome Oswego's big eighth inning.
The Cyclones will now continue to head down south as they take on TCNJ and McDaniel in Myrtle Beach later this week.
