HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. –
Paul Links' first career home run in game two helped the Centenary University baseball team earn a split of its doubleheader with New Paltz on Friday afternoon at Our Diamond of Dreams.
New Paltz got a strong performance from
Billy Moeller on the mound to win game one, 3-0. Centenary trailed 3-1 in game two, but Links' long ball helped the home team secure a 5-4 victory.
Game One Recap (New Paltz Won 3-0):
New Paltz took advantage of a pair of Centenary errors to get on the board in the top of the second in this one.
Dean Stalzer reached via an error and stole second before another Cyclone error moved him to third. A groundout from
Tommy Kreider allowed him to score.
Both teams had their chances in the middle innings but neither side was able to take advantage.
New Paltz was able to tack on two more runs in the top of the seventh for the 3-0 advantage.
Michael Boccarossa had a sac fly and
Ryan Mackle added an RBI single.
The Cyclones were unable to answer in the bottom half of that inning and New Paltz claimed the 3-0 win.
Moeller went seven strong to earn the win for New Paltz as he gave up five hits and recorded five strikeouts.
Jared Miller took the loss for the Cyclones after going five innings and giving up just one unearned run on three hits.
Nick Payne had two hits in the game for the Cyclones.
Stalzer had one hits and two runs scored for New Paltz.
Game Two Recap (Centenary Won 5-4):
The two teams traded runs in the first inning of this one.
Jake Keenan delivered an RBI single for the Cyclones' tally.
New Paltz went on top, 3-1 with a pair of runs in the top of the third.
Keenan helped the Cyclones cut their deficit in the bottom half of that frame. He lifted a sac fly to center that scored
Jon Fleck and made it a 3-2 game.
Centenary took the lead back in the bottom of the fifth. With Payne and Fleck on base and one out, Links hammered a three-run home run over the fence left for a 5-3 advantage.
New Paltz made it a 5-4 game in the top of the sixth, but
Chris Hess got the final out in that inning on the mound.
Hess was able to keep New Paltz off the board in the top of the seventh and Centenary secured the 5-4 win.
Nick Guiro picked up his second straight win for the Cyclones on the mound. He went 5.2 innings and gave up four and struck out two. Hess tossed the final 1.1 and allowed one hit while striking out two.
Kyle Gaertner took the loss for New Paltz after giving up three runs in two innings.
Links was a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored for the Cyclones while Keenan had a hit and two RBIs. Fleck went 1-for-1 with two walks and three runs scored.
