Fleck Doubles Home Two as Baseball Falls to Cairn

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – Right fielder Jon Fleck doubled home a pair of runs in the fifth, but it was not enough as the Centenary University baseball team fell to Cairn University, 13-3 on Wednesday afternoon.

Cairn took an early lead in this one with a run in the top of the first and three runs in the top of the third.

The Highlanders pushed its lead to 5-0 with a run in the top of the fifth. Caleb Edman delivered an RBI single in that frame for the visitors.

The Cyclones got on the board in the bottom half of that inning. With two outs, second baseman Anthony Vassallo doubled home designated hitter Nicholas Grifone. After left fielder Nicholas Gattuso singled to put two runners on, Fleck hammered a double to right field that scored two and made it a 5-3 game.

Cairn added to its lead with three runs in the top of the sixth which made it an 8-3 game.

The Highlanders capped the scoring with five runs in the top of the eighth. Ryan Clark delivered a two-run double to left in the inning.

Cairn claimed the 13-3 win.

Cameron Culver earned the win on the mound for Cairn as he gave up three runs on six hits in the complete game effort. Yonelvi Puello took the loss for Centenary as he surrendered four runs on two hits in three innings.

Samuel Spadea had two hits and three RBIs to lead Cairn.

Fleck had one hit and two RBIs for the Cyclones while Vassallo had a hit, a run scored and an RBI.

Centenary returns to action on Thursday, Mar. 17 when it hosts John Jay at 3:30 p.m.
