Early Lead Not Enough as Wrestling Falls to Muhlenberg

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Sophomore Xavier Pena and senior Cameron Bruffy each recorded wins by fall but Muhlenberg College won the final five weight classes to secure a 28-18 win over the Centenary University wrestling team on Sunday afternoon.

Muhlenberg jumped out to an early lead with a win at 125-pounds.

However, the Cyclones bounced back with four straight wins and took an 18-6 lead in the match.

Senior Jacy Jones got Centenary on the board with a win by decision at 133-pounds. It was Jones' 13th win of the season and third by decision.

Pena recorded a first period fall at 141-pounds. It was Pena's 15th victory this season and fifth by fall. Pena's win came over Greg Baum who is ranked fifth in the Mideast region.

Bruffy followed that up with a fall of his own in 2:35 at 149-pounds. It was Bruffy's 14th win of the season as he, Jones and Pena all remain undefeated in dual meet action this season.

One of the most exciting battles of the afternoon came at 157-pounds as freshman Adrian Pietri took on Ezra Toll. The two wrestlers went back-and-forth throughout the bout and looked to be headed to overtime but Pietri was able to secure two points in the final 10 seconds of the third period for the 8-6 decision.

Muhlenberg was able to capture the final five weight classes to secure the win in the match. The Mules got two wins by decision. One of those was a tight one as Fletcher Goodman just edged senior Justin Hopman for a 3-2 decision at 184-pounds.

In exhibition action, freshman Angelo Piazza recorded a win by decision over Scott Horry.

Centenary is back in action on Thursday, Feb. 3 when it hosts Delaware Valley at 7 p.m. The Cyclones will honor their seven seniors prior to the start of the match.
