HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – A pair of first half goals from senior
Besnik Hadzovic powered the Centenary University men's soccer team to a 3-1 win over Brooklyn College on Saturday afternoon.
The two teams battled back and forth through the first couple of minutes of the game.
Centenary broke through for the first goal in the 20th minute of the contest. Freshman
Matt Paterno played a ball into the box and Hadzovic settled it for his first goal of the season.
The Cyclones added to their lead in the 32nd minute as once again it was Paterno playing a ball into the box that Hadzovic settled and punched home.
The two teams continued to battle as the Cyclones took a 2-0 lead at the half. Centenary held an 8-6 edge in shots in the first 45 minutes of the contest.
Centenary continued to push the tempo in the second half and in the 65th minute added to its lead. Junior
Devin Lebel played a ball into the box and junior
Mahir Yilmaz pushed it home for his team leading third goal of the year. Centenary took a 3-0 lead in the contest.
Brooklyn finally broke through in the 82nd minute as
Alex Sosa converted a penalty kick for a goal.
Centenary had a couple more chances but was unable to convert. The Cyclones secured the 3-1 win.
Senior
Paul LiTrenta made three saves to secure the win in goal. Sophomore
Nick Lupo was not forced to make a save in 8:52 of relief work. Utku Tanritanir made four saves in the loss for Brooklyn.
Centenary held an 18-10 advantage in shots in the game and took four of the game's six corner kicks.
The Cyclones are back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 22 when they travel to Rutgers-Newark for a 7:30 p.m. game.
