EWING, N.J. – Designated hitter
Nicholas Grifone had a pair of RBIs in game two to lead the Centenary University baseball team against Cairn University in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action on Saturday afternoon.
Cairn jumped out to a 4-0 lead in game one and eventually claimed the 7-1 victory. Grifone had two hits and two RBIs in game two but it was not enough as the Highlanders earned a 12-2 win in game two.
Game One Recap (Cairn Won 7-1): Cairn scored a single run in the second and three more in the third to take a 4-0 lead.
Brian Amantia Jr. had a two-run single in the third to highlight the early action.
The Highlanders tacked on another run in the fifth for a 5-0 advantage.
Centenary broke through with a run in the top of the seventh.
Miron Miller drew a one out walk and
Jon Fleck roped a double to left that scored Miller. That made it a 5-1 game.
Cairn added two more runs in the eighth and claimed the 7-1 victory.
Carson Conradt earned the win after allowing just two hits in six innings of work and striking out nine.
Scott Ducey suffered the loss after giving up seven runs on eight hits and striking out eight in eight innings.
Amantia Jr. had two hits and two RBIs to lead Cairn.
Fleck had two hits, including the RBI double for the Cyclones.
Game Two Recap (Cairn Won 12-2): Cairn jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the bottom of the first.
Quinton Pertkiewicz had a two-run single in the inning.
The Highlanders added a run in the second and two in the fourth for a 6-0 lead.
Centenary broke through for two runs in the seventh inning.
Jonathan Pezzato and
Matt Perine drew walks to start the inning. A wild pitch moved the runners up a base before Grifone delivered a two-out two-run double to center field. That base knock made it a 6-2 game.
Cairn sent 12 batters to the plate and scored six runs in the eighth inning. That allowed the home team to seal a 12-2 win.
Jake Kraihanzel earned the win after going six innings and allowing just three hits.
Jared Miller took the loss for the Cyclones after giving up six runs on eight hits in 3.2 innings of work.
Pertkiewicz and
Samuel Spadea each had two hits and two RBIs for Cairn.
Grifone had two hits and two RBIs for the Cyclones.
Despite the losses on Saturday, the Cyclones have qualified for the CSAC Tournament for the first time since 2013. The fourth seeded Cyclones will travel to top seeded Keystone for a best of three game set starting Friday, May 7.
