LA PLUME, Pa. – First baseman
Kevin Zaccareo Jr. had a pair of hits in each game to lead the fourth seeded Centenary University baseball team against top seeded Keystone College in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) semifinals on Friday afternoon.
Game one saw Keystone score all its runs in the first four innings and claim a 7-0 victory. The Cyclones held a 3-1 advantage in game two before the Giants battled back and earned a 17-3 victory.
Game One Recap (Keystone Won 7-0): The Giants put single runs on the board in the first and second innings to claim a 2-0 advantage.
Centenary had a chance in the top of the third as center fielder
Paul Links doubled and designated hitter
Nicholas Grifone and catcher
Chris Miller loaded the bases but Keystone was able to get the final out to keep the Cyclones off the board.
Keystone doubled its lead to 4-0, with a two-run home run from
Adam Kelly in the bottom of the third.
The Giants put three more on the board for a 7-0 advantage in the bottom of the fourth.
Larry Sims had an RBI double in the inning for the home team.
The Cyclones made a nice defensive play to end the seventh inning.
Matt Oehrlein got
RJ Gouldsbury to ground out for out number two. Centenary caught
Nick Carlini too far off third base on the play and a run down involving Zaccareo Jr., third baseman
Anthony Vassallo, Oehrlein and shortstop
Ivan Gonzalez got Carlini.
The Cyclones again loaded the bases in the eighth inning but were unable to push anything across.
Keystone claimed the 7-0 win.
Jared Rowley earned the win on the hill as he went eight innings and allowed eight hits while striking out nine.
Jared Miller started for the Cyclones and took the loss after giving up seven runs in five innings. Oehrlein went the final three for the visitors and allowed just two hits.
Carlini had three hits and a run scored for the Giants while Kelly and Sims had a hit and two RBIs.
Links went 3-for-5 to lead the Cyclones while Zaccareo Jr. was 2-for-3.
Game Two Recap (Keystone Won 17-3): The Cyclones struck first in game one as Links reached on a fielder choice in the third inning. Catcher
Jonathan Pezzato scored on the play after leading off the inning with a double.
After Keystone tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the third, the Cyclones went right back to work in the top of the fourth. Back-to-back infield singles from Zaccareo Jr. and Vassallo put runners on first and second. Keystone got the second out of the frame before Pezzato dropped an RBI single into right field. Gonzalez followed with an RBI single to center and the Cyclones had a 3-1 edge.
Unfortunately those proved to be the final runs the Cyclones could manage in the contest. While Centenary was being held in check by the Keystone pitching staff, the Giants offense went to work and put 16 runs on the board.
The big inning came in the fourth as Keystone scored six times. Chris Hadsall had three RBIs over the final five innings including a two-run single in the fourth.
Keystone claimed the 17-3 win.
Nathan Hinkley earned the win on the hill for Keystone. He went seven innings and gave up three runs on six hits.
Nick Guiro took the loss for the Cyclones after surrendering seven runs on eight hits in three innings.
Hadsall had four hits and three RBIs in the game while Gouldsbury added three hits and four RBIs for the Giants.
Zaccareo Jr. had two hits and a run scored for the Cyclones while Pezzato added two hits, a run scored and an RBI.
