HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – Freshman
Brandon Salmon's goal with 28 seconds left in regulation helped the Centenary University men's soccer team earn a thrilling 1-1 double overtime tie with Marywood University in Atlantic East Conference action.
Before the regular season finale got underway, the Cyclones took a moment to honor seniors
Kenneth Pinedo,
Stephen Zuluaga,
Besnik Hadzovic,
Shane Wilson,
Mahir Yilmaz,
Nik Polizos,
Eric Nugent,
Joseph Ertl and
Yousef Fahmi.
The game was a battle from the opening whistle. Junior
Andrew Tarkazikis had a key stretch as he made four saves in a just over four-minute stretch.
The Cyclones had a couple of chances that went just wide or high.
Marywood slipped one into the back of the net just 24 seconds before the half as
Richard Fuchs controlled a loose ball in the box and scored.
The Pacers took the 1-0 lead at the break despite five first half saves from Tarkazikis.
Both teams had chances in the second period but it wasn't till the final 28 seconds that either team found the back of the net. The Cyclones got the ball into the box and freshman
Matt Paterno centered a ball that Salmon was able to power home. Salmon's first career goal tied the game 1-1.
That goal sent the Cyclones to overtime for the first time since November of 2019.
Tarkazikis made two huge stops in the first overtime period to help the Cyclones keep the game knotted at 1-1. The Cyclones got off a shot from Nugent but
Alex Russo was able to save it.
Ertl got off the only shot of the second overtime period but Russo was able to get a hand on it and the Cyclones and Marywood ended in a 1-1 draw.
Tarkazikis finished with the nine saves for the Cyclones, including two in overtime. Russo recorded four saves for Marywood.
The tie with Marywood concluded the regular season for the Cyclones. Centenary will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 30 when the Atlantic East Conference Tournament begins. The Cyclones will learn their seed and first round opponent once the rest of the league concludes the regular season on Wednesday, Oct. 27. Stay with CentenaryCyclones.com for updates.
