ARLINGTON, Va. – Senior
Eric Nugent scored as the Centenary University men's soccer team battled Marymount University to a 1-1 double overtime tie in the Atlantic East Conference playoffs on Saturday.
Ultimately the Saints advanced to the next round of the playoffs after winning the shoot out round 5-3.
The two teams battled early as junior
Andrew Tarkazikis had a pair of saves in the first 10 minutes to keep Marymount off the board.
The Cyclones got on the board at 14:13 as senior
Stephen Zuluaga took a free kick and booted it into the box. Nugent was able to head the ball home for a 1-0 advantage.
Tarkazikis made another big save to help Centenary carry the 1-0 advantage into the half.
Just 2:06 into the second half, Marymount got the equalizer.
Carlos Varona one-timed a pass from
Nicholas Vigo into the bottom left corner and tied the game at 1-1.
Tarkazikis made three more stops down the stretch while
Brian Cruz turned away a shot from Nugent and the game remained tied at 1-1 at the end of regulation.
Both teams had chances in the first overtime but neither was able to convert.
Centenary fired off a handful of shots in the second overtime but the chances went high or wide.
Tarkazikis came up with a big save with 30 seconds left in the second overtime period to keep the game tied at 1-1.
In the best of five shoot out round, both teams were successful on their first chances. Senior
Nik Polizos converted for the Cyclones. Both teams were successful on their second chances as well with Nugent powering one home. The shoot out remained tied at 3-3 as Zuluaga put one in the back of the net for the Cyclones.
In the fourth go around of the shoot out, Marymount converted its chance while the Cyclones' shot went high. Marymount converted its fifth chance to secure the shoot out victory and the right to advance.
Cruz finished with two saves in goal for Marymount while Tarkazikis had seven saves for the Cyclones.
