HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – Senior
Jon Fleck reached base twice in both games, but the Centenary University baseball team fell to Eastern University in both games of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Our Diamond of Dreams.
The Eagles scored four runs in the first inning of game one en route to a 22-5 win. Game two saw the Eagles scored three runs in each of the first three innings en route to a 16-3 win.
Game One Recap:
Eastern put four runs on the board in the top of the first and tacked on two more in the second for the early 6-0 advantage.
Liam Clarke's third RBI of the game gave the Eagles a 7-0 lead in the top of the third inning.
Centenary got on the board in the bottom half of that inning. Sophomore
Brandon Smith laced a two-run double to center field. That base knock allowed sophomore
Christopher Gass and Fleck to score on the play. Smith then crossed the plate on sophomore
Paul Links' double.
Eastern continued to put runs on the board and took a 22-3 lead through six innings of play.
Freshmen
Kevin Zaccareo Jr. and
Kyle Szuszkowski scored with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, which made the final score, 22-5.
Michael Gray earned the win on the mound for Eastern as he went six innings and allowed three runs on eight hits. Senior
Nick Scotto took the loss for the Cyclones as he surrendered 10 runs in 3.1 innings of action.
Links and Fleck each had two hits in the game while Fleck scored one run and Links had one RBI.
Clarke had three hits, three RBIs and two runs scored for Eastern.
Game Two Recap:
A three run home run from
Mickey Foytik in the top of the first gave the Eagles an early advantage in game two.
The Cyclones got one of those runs back in the bottom of the first as Smith lifted a sac fly to center field that scored Fleck.
Eastern posted a combined 10 runs in the second through fourth innings and took a 13-1 lead in the game.
Centenary got a pair of runs back in the fifth as junior
Nicholas Grifone doubled home Zaccareo Jr. Grifone then crossed the plate on Fleck's RBI groundout.
Eastern added three runs in the top of the sixth for the 16-3 win.
Matt Poma earned the win for the Eagles after giving up one run in four innings. Sophomore
Matt Oehrlein took the loss for the Cyclones after surrendering six runs in 1.2 innings of work.
Fleck reached base twice on walks for the Cyclones and had a run scored and an RBI. Grifone added a hit, an RBI and a run scored as well.
Clarke had four hits, two RBIs and three runs scored in game two.
The Cyclones will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 29 when they host Norwich in a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m.
