McKenzie and Bossert Power Women's Basketball to 61-46 Win Over Bryn Athyn

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – The Centenary University women's basketball team overcame a seven-point deficit after one period and earned a 61-46 win over Bryn Athyn College on Wednesday night in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play.

Bryn Athyn quickly jumped out to a 6-0 lead as Clayshonia Cogmon had a pair of early buckets.

The Lions pushed their lead to 10-7 as Jayda Campbell connected on a basket at 4:11.

Bryn Athyn eventually took a 15-8 lead after one period of play.

Centenary opened the second quarter on an 8-2 run and cut the Bryn Athyn lead to one, 17-16 with 7:35 left until the half. Sophomore Jessica McKenzie and freshman Kayla Burnett each had three points during that stretch.

The two teams traded baskets over the next several minutes as sophomore Victoria Jacobs' jumper at 3:23 tied the game at 22-22.

Bryn Athyn scored the final three points of the quarter and took a 25-22 edge at the break. Alexis Mitchem tallied all three of those points.

Centenary scored eight of the first 10 points in the third quarter and turned a three-point deficit into a three-point advantage. McKenzie scored four points in that stretch as the Cyclones led 30-27.

The Cyclones and Lions continued to battle on both ends of the court as four straight points from sophomore Taylor Bossert put the home team ahead, 38-32 with 2:59 showing on the clock.

A lay-up from McKenzie gave the Cyclones a 40-33 advantage with 1:29 to go in the period.

Bossert knocked down a pair of three throws in the final 20 seconds, which gave the Cyclones a 42-35 lead after three periods of play.

Centenary opened the fourth quarter on a 10-3 run and took a 52-38 lead with 4:32 to go in the game. Bossert had six points in that scoring spurt.

A Bossert three-pointer pushed the Centenary advantage to 57-42 with 1:28 remaining in the contest.

The Cyclones eventually claimed a 61-46 victory for their second straight win.

Centenary shot 35.6 percent from the field and went 16-for 22 from the foul line. Bryn Athyn shot 33.9 percent from the field and was just 7-for-20 from the charity stripe. Centenary held a dominating advantage in the rebounding battle, 54-33.

McKenzie posted her fifth double-double of the season with 13 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Cyclones. Bossert finished with a team-high 15 points while Jacobs added nine points. Freshman Carmen Escano added 11 rebounds while fellow freshman Janne Rowan had 10 rebounds.

Cogmon led Bryn Athyn with 11 points and eight rebounds.

The Cyclones are back in action on Friday, Jan. 17 when they travel to Notre Dame for a 5:30 p.m. game.
