Late Basket Allows Notre Dame to Slip By Women's Basketball, 52-51

BALTIMORE, Md. – Sophomore Taylor Bossert scored a game-high 19 points but a late basket lifted Notre Dame to a 52-51 win over the Centenary University women's basketball team in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play on Friday night.

With the game tied at 2-2 in the first, Notre Dame went on a 9-2 run and grabbed an 11-4 lead with 4:15 remaining in the period. Jaylah Lewis hit a three-pointer during that stretch.

Sophomore Victoria Jacobs hit a jumper at 1:41 which made it a five-point game, 14-9.

Notre Dame scored the final four points of the period from the foul line and took an 18-9 lead after 10 minutes of play.

The Cyclones opened the second quarter on an 11-3 run and pulled to within one, 21-20 with 5:02 showing on the clock. Bossert struck for seven points in that scoring spurt.

The two teams traded points over the final five minutes as Notre Dame took a 24-22 lead at the half.

A pair of early three-pointers from Keyeira Dawson to start the third quarter gave the Gators a 32-26 lead at the 7:41 mark.

Centenary scored seven straight points and took a 33-32 edge with 4:42 to go.

Notre Dame went back on top with a bucket at 4:33.

Centenary closed out the third quarter on a 9-4 run and took a 42-38 lead after three periods of play. Bossert drained a three-pointer in that stretch.

The Cyclones and Gators traded points to start the fourth quarter as Bossert's jumper at 6:20 gave the visitors a 44-43 edge.

Notre Dame used a 7-0 run to take a 50-44 lead with five minutes to play.

Centenary responded by scoring the next seven points in the game for 51-50 edge with 32 seconds to go. Sophomore Jessica McKenzie converted a traditional three-point play in that stretch.

Daija Fitchett hit a jumper with 16 seconds play and Notre Dame took a 52-51 lead.

Centenary had one last chance but couldn't get a pair of foul shots to fall and the Gators claimed victory.

Notre Dame shot 28.3 percent from the field and was 11-for-19 from the foul line. Centenary posted a 33.3 field goal percentage and was 6-for-9 from the foul line. The Cyclones held a 47-43 edge in the rebounding battle.

In addition to Bossert's 19 points, the Cyclones got seven points each from Jacobs and McKenzie. Jacobs added nine rebounds and four assists while McKenzie had eight rebounds and two assists. Freshman Janne Rowan led the Cyclones on the boards with 10.

Dawson led Notre Dame with 15 points while Fitchett had the go-ahead basket and a game-high 14 rebounds.

The Cyclones are back in action on Wednesday, Jan. 22 when they travel to Rosemont for a 6 p.m. game.
