PHOENIXVILLE, Pa. – The Centenary University baseball team ran its win streak to five straight games with a doubleheader sweep of the University of Valley Forge in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action on Saturday.
The Cyclones have their first five game win streak since April of 2016.
Centenary took game one by a 12-0 margin and completed the sweep with a 12-7 victory in game two.
Game One Recap (Centenary Won 12-0)
The Cyclones got the offense going in the second inning of game one. With two outs, senior
Chase Koffel reached after being hit by a pitch and came around to score on sophomore
Jonathan Pezzato's double. Junior
Jon Fleck followed with a walk and a wild pitch moved both runners up a base. Freshman
Christopher Gass scored both runners with a single to center as Centenary took a 3-0 lead.
The Cyclones pushed their lead to 5-0 in the third as senior
Casey Brown delivered an RBI single and Pezzato had a sac fly.
Koffel gave Centenary a 6-0 advantage with a sac fly in the top of the fourth.
The Cyclones sent nine runners to the plate and scored four runs in the fifth inning. The big blow came off the bat of junior
Cole Fratesi, who had a two run single to right field.
Centenary added single runs in the sixth and seventh innings for a 12-0 victory. Junior
Chris Miller had an RBI single in the sixth and junior
Shoehi Taguchi reached via a fielder's choice, which allowed a run to score.
Junior
Christopher Lilly picked up his team leading sixth win of the year with six innings of shutout baseball. Senior
Frankie Iannone pitched a scoreless seventh inning to close out the contest.
Joseph Aguiar took the loss for Valley Forge after giving up 10 runs on 10 hits in 4.1 innings.
Fratesi had two hits and two RBIs for the Cyclones while Miller had two hits and two runs scored. Brown and senior
Ryan Jasiecki each contributed two hits and an RBI in the win.
Jeffrey Espinal and
Cody Rak had two hits each for Valley Forge.
Game Two Recap (Centenary Won 12-7)
The Cyclones got to work quickly in game two with three runs in the top of the first. Gass had an RBI single before junior
Nick Scotto drew a bases loaded walk to force in a run. Freshman
Keiji Ipposhi capped the early scoring with a sac fly.
Valley Forge made it a one-run game with two runs in the bottom of the second.
The Cyclones exploded for seven runs and a 10-2 lead in the top of the third. Jasiecki led off the inning with his first home run of the year. Koffel, sophomore
Joe Saffioti, Fleck and Fratesi all had RBI singles in the inning.
The Patriots put three runs on the board in the fifth inning as
James Jackson had a two-run home run in the frame.
Jasiecki pushed the Centenary lead to 12-5 with a two-run single in the sixth.
Valley Forge pulled to within 12-7 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh but freshman
Jared Miller got the final out to secure the win.
Brown earned his first win of the year on the mound as he gave up five runs on six hits in 4.1 innings of work.
Shashwat Chitnis took the loss after giving up eight runs on five hits in 2.1 innings of action.
Fleck and Jasiecki led the Cyclones at the plate as each recorded three hits. Fleck added two runs scored and an RBI while Jasiecki had three RBIs and a run scored. Gass and freshman
Paul Links each had two hits and two runs scored.
Rak led Valley Forge with two hits, two runs scored and two RBIs.
The Cyclones are back in action on Tuesday, April 16 when they travel to Delaware Valley for a 3 p.m. game.
