FLEMINGTON, N.J. – Senior
Casey Brown and freshman
Keiji Ipposhi combined for five RBIs and four runs scored to lead the Centenary University baseball team to a 12-3 win over the University of Valley Forge in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play on Friday afternoon.
The victory ran the Cyclones' win streak to three straight games. It is Centenary's first three-game win streak since April 21-26 last year.
Valley Forge struck first in the contest as the Patriots plated a pair of runs in the top of the first. The first run scored on a balk before
Cody Rak recorded an RBI double.
The Cyclones got one of those runs back in the bottom of the first as junior
Cole Fratesi lifted a sac fly to right field that scored freshman
Paul Links.
Centenary tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the second as Ipposhi ripped a double to left field that plated fellow freshman
Dante Vartolone.
The home team took a 4-2 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Brown doubled home sophomore
Joe Saffioti, who had led off the inning with a walk. Senior
Chase Koffel poked a sacrifice fly to center that scored Ipposhi.
Valley Forge pulled to within one, 4-3 in the top of the fifth as
Jonathan Pacheco had an RBI groundout.
Centenary pushed its lead to 6-3 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth. Koffel ripped a double to right field that scored Brown before Fratesi was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, which forced in freshman
Christopher Gass.
Sophomore
Manny Miqueo scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh and extended the Centenary advantage to 7-3.
Centenary capped the scoring with five runs in the bottom of the eighth. The big blow in that frame came off the bat of Brown as he cranked a three-run home run to left field. It was Brown's first home run since his freshman season in 2016.
Junior
Nick Scotto held the Patriots off the board in the top of the ninth to seal the 12-3 win for the Cyclones.
Senior
Stephen Fedak picked up his first win of the year with five innings of work. He surrendered three runs on five hits while striking out seven. Scotto went the final four innings and gave up three hits while striking out seven for the save.
Zachary Nunnery took the loss for Valley Forge after giving up six runs on 10 hits in six innings of work.
Brown led the Cyclones at the plate with three hits, four RBIs and two runs scored while Ipposhi added two hits, two runs scored and an RBI. Links finished with a pair of hits and two runs scored while Koffel had a hit and two RBIs.
Rak finished with two hits and the RBI for Valley Forge.
The Cyclones and Patriots wrap up their conference play with a doubleheader at Valley Forge on Saturday, April 13. First pitch of game one is set for 2 p.m.
