ROANOKE, Va. – Senior
Etiini Udott tied the school record for career victories to highlight the day one action for the Centenary University wrestling team at the NCAA National Championship Meet in Virignia.
Udott's win over
Ken Burrs of Waynesburg on Friday night gave him 99 career victories as a Cyclone. That tied
Chris Burdge's (99 wins from 2010-14) school record for career wins.
Udott went 2-1 on day one of the championship to lead the Cyclones. The senior opened his tournament run with an 8-2 decision over
Jonathan Wagner of the Coast Guard Academy. Udott had a pair of takedowns in the first period to get an early lead and added one in the third period for the win.
In the quarterfinals Udott, the top seed in the 197-pound bracket, suffered a hard fought 6-2 decision versus the eighth seed,
Riley Kauzlaric of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Udott bounced back with a 13-6 decision over Burrs in the consolation bracket. Udott recorded a nearfall in the second period to pick up four points and added a pair of third period takedowns.
Udott will now face
Antonio McCloud of Mount Saint Joseph's on Saturday morning.
Senior
Jordan Juliano battled in the 174-pound bracket during his first appearance at the National Championship. He was faced with the tough task of taking on the top seed
Darden Schurg of Wabash to start the day, Juliano gave it all he had but ultimately fell 3-2. After no score in the first period, Schurg used an escape and a takedown to gain the early lead. Juliano tallied a pair of late escapes but wasn't able to close the gap.
Juliano battled back with a 5-3 decision over
Michael Gargano of Johnson and & Wales. The senior used a pair of first period takedowns to claim an early lead and held on for the win. Juliano then saw his tournament run come to an end as he fell to seventh seeded,
Tanner Vassar of Augsburg. Vassar took a 4-0 lead after two periods and claimed the 9-1 major decision.
Senior
Christopher Muce turned in a strong showing in the 157-pound bracket for the Cyclones. Facing fourth seeded
Antwon Pugh of Mount Union to start the day, Muce suffered a 10-3 decision set back.
A forfeit win kept Muce alive in the consolation bracket. In a rematch of the NCAA Mideast Regional Championship, Muce took
Kaidon Winters, the third seed from Rochester Institute of Technology to three overtime periods. A reversal with 13 seconds to go in the third overtime session lifted Winters to a 3-2 decision over Muce.
Redshirt junior
Alec Donovan battled at 165-pounds in his first appearance at the National Championship. Second seeded
Taylor Shay of Roger Williams used a strong third period to edge Donovan by a 6-5 margin in the first round. Donovan then saw his tournament run come to an end as
Adrian Gonzalez of Johnson & Wales claimed an 11-6 decision.
Udott will be back in action Saturday morning as the meet continues at 10 a.m.
