FLEMINGTON, N.J. – Junior
Jon Fleck tied the school record for single-game home runs with three in game two as the Centenary University baseball team swept a doubleheader from John Jay College on Friday afternoon at Diamond Nation.
Freshman
Christopher Gass hit his first career home run in game one to lead the Cyclones to a 2-1 victory. Fleck left the yard three times in game two to lift Centenary to a 6-3 come-from-behind victory.
Fleck tied
Anthony DeSomma's school record of three home runs set during the 2011 season against Baptist Bible.
Game One Recap (Centenary Won 2-1)
John Jay struck first with a run in the third inning.
Danny Wynne led off the inning with single to right center and moved to third on a sacrifice and an infield single. Wynne crossed the plate as
Zach Hyde grounded out to first base.
Wynne proved to be the only Bloodhound who reached third base in the game. Junior
Christopher Lilly limited the John Jay batters to just five hits in his seven innings of action.
The Cyclones scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the third as junior
Chris Miller singled to right center with one out and scored as Gass drove the first pitch he saw over the left field fence for his first career home run.
Those two runs proved to be all the run support Lilly needed as he had three strikeouts and benefited from a double play over the final four innings of action.
Lilly moved to 5-0 on the year with his third complete game performance. Lilly allowed the one run on five hits and struck out five.
Jared Hershfield took the loss for John Jay after giving up two runs on four hits in six innings.
Miller was 2-ofr-2 with a run scored for the Cyclones while Gass had a hit and two RBIs.
Luis Nunez led John Jay with two hits.
Game Two Recap (Centenary Won 6-3)
John Jay jumped out to an early lead in game two with single runs in the top of the first and third innings.
Centenary got one of those runs back in the bottom of the third as Fleck ripped a pitch over the fence in right field for his second home run of the year.
John Jay pushed its lead to 3-1 in the top of the fourth as
Phillip Bellomo singled home Nunez.
The Cyclones began their comeback in the fourth inning as freshman
Paul Links led off with a triple and sophomore
Jonathan Pezzato followed with a walk. Pezzato stole second and the ball got away from John Jay, which allowed Links to score.
Fleck tied the game at 3-3 as he led off the fifth inning with another home run to right field.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, senior
Chase Koffel beat out an infield single and sophomore
Joe Saffioti drew a walk. With two runners on and one out, Fleck drove his third home run of the game over the fence in right center.
Junior
Nick Scotto set the Bloodhounds down in order in the top of the seventh as Centenary claimed the 6-3 win.
Scotto picked up the win on the mound for the Cyclones with three innings of no hit work. He struck out five of the nine batters he faced. Senior
Casey Brown started the game for the Cyclones and gave up three runs on five hits in four innings. Brown finished with eight strikeouts in the contest.
Sean Napier took the loss for John Jay as he surrendered six runs on nine hits.
Fleck went 3-for-4 in the contest with five RBIs and three runs scored while Links and senior
Ryan Jasiecki each had two hits for the Cyclones.
Bellomo and Napier each had a hit and an RBI for John Jay.
The Cyclones will be back in action on Friday, April 5 as they open Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play by hosting Keystone College at Diamond Nation at 3 p.m.
