Walk-off Win Gives Baseball Doubleheader Split with CCNY

AUGUSTA, N.J. – Senior Chase Koffel's RBI double with one out in the bottom of the seventh gave the Centenary University baseball team a 4-3 walk-off win over the City College of New York (CCNY) in game two of the doubleheader at Skylands Stadium on Saturday.

In game one, CCNY jumped out to an early lead in the first inning and claimed the 7-4 victory.

Game One Recap (CCNY Won 7-4)
The Beavers jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the top of the first inning. Stephen Peters had an RBI double and Chris Moreno added an RBI single in the inning.

The Cyclones got one of those runs back in the bottom of the first. Junior Cole Fratesi drew a two-out bases loaded walk that allowed freshman Paul Links to cross the plate.

CCNY added to its lead with three runs in the top of the third as the visitors took a 6-1 lead. The inning was highlighted by a two-run single to right field from Moreno.

The Cyclones got one of those runs back in the bottom of the fourth. Back-to-back doubles from freshmen Anthony Ranaudo and Christopher Gass led to a Centenary run.

Centenary plated two more runs in the bottom of the fifth. Senior Ryan Jasiecki led off with a double to center and crossed the plate on junior Jon Fleck's triple to right center. Fratesi then followed with an RBI single as Fleck scampered home. That made it a 6-4 game in favor of CCNY.

CCNY tacked on a run in the top of the sixth and that three-run advantage proved to enough as the Beavers claimed the 7-4 win.

Cal Romano earned the win on the mound for Beavers as he tossed six innings and allowed four runs on eight hits. Christian Barletta tossed a scoreless seventh inning to earn the save. Senior Brenden Gerity took the loss for the Cyclones after giving up six runs on five hits in three innings of action. Fellow senior Stephen Fedak was strong in relief as he allowed just one run on three hits with eight strikeouts in four innings.

Moreno led CCNY at the plate, as he was 3-for-4 with three RBIs.

Jasiecki was a perfect 3-for-3 with a run scored while Gass had a pair of hits and RBI. Fratesi contributed a hit and two RBIs for the Cyclones.

Game Two Recap (Cyclones Won 4-3)
Game two saw the Cyclones get going early with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. Jasiecki delivered an RBI triple to right field before Fleck lifted a sacrifice fly to left to score Jasiecki.

The Cyclones extended their lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the second as Gass doubled to right field and sophomore Jonathan Pezzato scored all the way from first on the play.

Junior Nick Scotto was in control of the mound as the right-hander struck out seven of the 11 batters he faced between the third and fifth innings.

The Beavers did manage to get on the board in the fourth as Rob Mandich drew a leadoff walk and came around to score on Hamley Volquez's inside the park home run. Volquez hit the ball to the deepest part as it landed at the base of the center field fence, which is 392 feet from the plate.

CCNY tied the game in the top of the sixth as Morendo doubled home Mandich with two outs.

The Cyclones had a runner on the third in the bottom of the sixth but could not get the go ahead run home.

Scotto recorded his career-high 10th strikeout in scoreless top of the seventh.

In the bottom of the seventh, Links reached on a single and moved to second as the Beavers got the first out of the inning at the plate. After Jasiecki was intentionally walked, Koffel delivered the game-winning hit, which plated Links for the Cyclones' win.

Scotto earned the win for the Cyclones after his complete game performance. He allowed three runs on four hits while striking out 10. Peter Komaroski took the loss for CCNY after giving up four runs on four hits in 6.1 innings of action.

Gass had two hits, a run scored and an RBI for the Cyclones. Jasiecki and Koffel each had a hit and an RBI as well.

The Cyclones are back in action on Tuesday, March 26 when they host FDU Florham for a single-game at Diamond Nation starting at 3 p.m.
