FLEMINGTON, N.J. – Senior
Casey Brown doubled home the game-tying runs in the bottom of the ninth but FDU-Florham answered with three runs in the top of the 10th inning to claim a 9-6 win over the Centenary University baseball team on Tuesday afternoon at Diamond Nation.
The Cyclones and Devils did a lot of their scoring late as 11 of the combined 15 runs in the game were scored in the seventh inning or later.
FDU Florham struck first in the game as
Jonathan Biale had an RBI double down the left field line with one out in the first inning.
The Devils added to their lead in the fourth as
Kevin Smiegocki had a double to left center and crossed the plate on
Joe Moskowitz's single through the right side.
FDU Florham pushed its lead to 3-0 in the top of the sixth as
Ian Havran reached via an error and scored on Moskowitz's sac fly.
Centenary got one of those runs back in the bottom half of the sixth as junior
Cole Fratesi reached via an error and came around to score on Brown's two-out single to left field.
The Cyclones took a 4-3 lead in the seventh inning as the home team sent seven runners to the plate and scored three runs. Junior
Nick Scotto ripped a two-out double down the left field line that scored senior
Chase Koffel and Fratesi. Scotto then crossed the plate as freshman
Anthony Ranaudo poked a single through the left side.
FDU Florham answered back with three runs of its own in the top of the eighth and grabbed a 6-4 lead. Moskowitz had a home run to right field for the Devils in the inning.
Down to their final at-bats in the bottom of the ninth, the Cyclones manufactured a pair of two-out runs and tied the game at 6-6. Fratesi reached with one-out after being hit by a pitch and Scotto followed with an infield single. After the Devils got the second out of the inning, Brown ripped a double to right center, which scored Fratesi and sophomore
Jonathan Pezzato who went into the game to run for Scotto.
FDU Florham scored three runs in the top of the tenth inning, highlighted by a two-run double from Biale, and took a 9-6 lead in the game.
The Cyclones got a runner on in the bottom of the 10th but could not get him home as FDU Florham claimed the extra inning victory.
Will Lapham earned the win in relief for the Devils as he tossed 2.1 innings of relief work and gave up two runs on two hits.
Joseph DeFeo earned the save with a scoreless 10th inning. Freshman
Paul Links took the loss after giving up three runs in 0.2 innings of work.
Moskowitz had three hits and three RBIs to lead the Devils while Biale added two hits and three RBIs.
Scotto led the Cyclones with four hits and two RBIs while Brown contributed two hits and three RBs.
The Cyclones are back in action when they host John Jay for a doubleheader on Friday, March 29. First pitch at Diamond Nation is scheduled for 12 p.m.
