Lilly's Complete Game Effort Helps Baseball Earn a Doubleheader Split with Bears

FLEMINGTON, N.J. – Junior Christopher Lilly pitched a complete game to help the Centenary University baseball team earn a doubleheader split with St. Joseph's College Brooklyn on Friday afternoon at Diamond Nation.

Lilly tossed a complete game and freshman Paul Links had four hits as the Cyclones claimed a 9-6 win in game one. The Bears used a late game comeback to earn the 3-2 victory in game two.

Game One Recap (Cyclones Won 9-6)
The Bears got out to an early lead in the contest as they scored four runs in the top of the first. William DeLuca and Louis Lombardi each hit home runs for St. Joseph's Brooklyn.

The Cyclones began their comeback in the bottom of the second as junior Cole Fratesi led off with a single and came around to score as Links drove a triple to center field. Links then crossed the plate on sophomore Joe Saffioti's RBI groundout.

In the bottom of the third inning, Centenary sent nine batters to the plate and scored five runs to take a 7-4 lead in the game. Senior Ryan Jasiecki started the inning with a walk and came around to score on senior Chase Koffel's triple to right center. Koffel scored a on a passed ball before Saffioti had an RBI single. Freshman Christopher Gass had an RBI single that scored two to cap the inning for the Cyclones.

The Bears got one of those runs back in the fifth as Anthony Palermo had triple and scored on a wild pitch.

The Cyclones tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Links contributed an RBI double before junior Chris Miller plated a run with a bases loaded walk.

Leading 9-5 heading to the top of the seventh, Centenary allowed one more run. Lilly got a strikeout to end the game and preserve the 9-6 win.

The win gave Centenary head coach Scott Kushner his 150th career win as a Cyclone.

Lilly picked up his fourth win of the season with the complete game effort. He gave up six runs, three of which were earned on seven hits. C.J. Bunnicelli gave up five runs on four hits in two innings for the Bears.

Links was 4-for-4 with two RBIs for the Cyclones while Fratesi had a hit and three runs scored. Gass and Saffioti each had two RBIs for Centenary.

DeLuca had two hits and two RBIs for St. Joseph's Brooklyn.

Game Two Recap (St. Joseph's Brooklyn Won 3-2)
The second game saw the Cyclones get on the board first as Fratesi doubled to right and with two outs in the frame scored on a wild pitch.

Centenary added to its lead in the third as junior Jon Fleck had an two-out single and crossed the plate on Jasiecki's RBI triple to right field.

The Cyclones maintained that 2-0 advantage until the top of the sixth. Chris Zinser had an RBI single before Dominick Caputo reached on an error which allowed two runs to score.

Centenary had two runners on in the bottom of the sixth but could not get either across and after a scoreless seventh, St. Joseph's Brooklyn claimed the 3-2 win.

Andrew Watters earned the win in relief for the Bears as he pitched the final two innings and allowed just one hit. Senior Casey Brown took the loss for the Cyclones as he gave up three runs on five hits in five plus innings of work.

Lombardi had two hits and a run scored for the Bears.

Jasiecki had two hits and an RBI for the Cyclones.

It's a quick turnaround for the Cyclones as they are back in action tomorrow, March 23 as they host CCNY for a doubleheader at Skylands Stadium in Augusta, New Jersey. First pitch of game one is set for 12 p.m.
