MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Freshman
Christopher Gass recorded four hits and two RBIs to lead the Centenary University baseball team in its doubleheader against Wells College on Friday afternoon at the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach.
Wells used a run in the bottom of the sixth to edge the Cyclones by a 7-6 margin in game one. In game two, it was a big sixth inning that broke open a close game and lifted the Express to a 10-3 victory.
Game One Recap (Wells Won 7-6)
The Cyclones got their offense rolling in the top of the first inning with a pair of runs. Senior
Ryan Jasiecki delivered a two-run single that scored freshman
Paul Links and junior
Jon Fleck.
Centenary extended its lead to 5-0 with a three run third inning. Gass scored on a wild pitch with the bases loaded before senior
Chase Koffel plated a pair of runs with a single.
Wells got two of those runs back in the bottom of the third.
Anthony Aumick had an RBI groundout and
Mark Yorkey added an RBI single.
Centenary pushed its lead to 6-2 in the top of the four as Gass had an RBI double which allowed Links to score his second run of the game.
Wells tied the game at 6-6 with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Tanner Dunkel had a two run single to highlight the frame for the Express.
The Cyclones had two runners on in the fifth and another in the sixth put was unable to push anything across to break the tie.
Wells broke the tie in the bottom of the sixth as Yorkey lifted a two-out sac fly to center field.
Centenary had one last chance in the top of the seventh inning as junior
Chris Miller walked and a pitch hit Koffel but the Express got a double play to get out of the inning and claim the 7-6 victory.
Matt Morgan earned the win for the Express with two innings of one hit relief work. Senior
JT Valley took the loss in his first action of the season. He allowed one run on two hits in 2.2 innings of work.
Dunkel went 3-for-3 with two RBIs to lead the Express at the plate while Yorkey had a hit and three RBIs.
Gass was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with a run scored and an RBI to lead the Cyclones. Koffel added two hits and two RBIs as well.
Game Two Recap (Wells Won 10-3)
Both offenses plated a run in the first inning of game two. After Wells took the early 1-0 lead, the Cyclones answered back in the bottom half of the frame. Gass' RBI single plated Koffel who had reached on a double.
Centenary took a 2-1 advantage in the game Fleck lifted a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Gass who had reached earlier in the inning.
Wells made it a 2-2 game with a run in the top of the fourth as
A.J. Nesci had an RBI single.
The Express put eight runs on the board in the top of the sixth and took a 10-2 lead in the contest. The big blow in the inning came off the bat of Yorkey as he had a bases clearing double.
Centenary got one of those runs back in the bottom of the sixth. Freshman
Anthony Ranaudo reached on an error and Fleck scored on the play. That was all the Cyclones could manage though as Wells claimed the 10-3 win.
Derek Shea earned the win in relief for the Express as he gave up one run on two hits in three innings of action. Senior
Casey Brown took the loss for the Cyclones as he gave up five runs in 5.1 innings of work.
Yorkey went 3-for-4 with three RBIS and two runs scored for the Express.
Gass finished with a hit, a run scored and an RBI for the Cyclones as Fleck also had a hit, a run scored and an RBI.
The Cyclones are back in action on Friday, March 22 when they host Saint Joseph's Brooklyn in a doubleheader at Diamond Nation starting at 12 p.m.
