Four Players Score in Double Figures as Women's Basketball Powers Past Valley Forge

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – Four players scored in double figures to lead the Centenary University women's basketball team to a 74-51 win over the University of Valley Forge in non-conference action on Monday night.

"I asked the team to play as hard as they could tonight," said head coach Rose Haller. "I thought they did that, and I was pleased with the efforts on the boards, especially from freshmen Janne Rowan and Carmen Escano (combined for 30 rebounds).

The two teams went back-and-forth early as lay-up from sophomore Carly Tarnowski at 5:36 put the Cyclones up 9-7.

Valley Forge got back-to-back buckets from Alea Flowers and Shaelynn Newborn and took an 11-9 advantage with 4:47 to go in the period.

Centenary responded with a 7-0 run and pushed its lead to 16-11 with 3:19 showing on the clock. Rowan scored a pair of baskets in that stretch.

A three-pointer from sophomore Taylor Bossert and a lay-up from Escano gave the Cyclones a 21-16 lead after 10 minutes of play.

After Valley Forge scored the first basket of the second quarter, the Cyclones responded with a 13-0 run which pushed its lead to 34-18 with 4:53 to go until the half. Sophomore Meghan Barone drained a pair of three-pointers during that stretch.

The two teams continued to battle as another three-pointer from Bossert at 2:07 gave the Cyclones a 40-22 lead.

The two teams went back-and-forth over the final two minutes as Centenary took a 44-28 lead at the break.

Centenary opened the third quarter on a 9-0 run and quickly pushed its lead to 53-30 with 7:10 showing on the clock. Sophomore Jessica McKenzie connected on a pair of lay-ups which gave Centenary its largest lead of the game.

The Cyclones and Patriots traded baskets as Centenary once again pushed its lead to 23, 59-36 on a lay-up from sophomore Victoria Jacobs at 3:51.

Valley Forge used a 9-0 run to cut the Centenary advantage to 14, 59-45 with 50 seconds left in the third. Carlee Conrad scored four points during that scoring stretch for the Patriots.

Another triple from Bossert and a bucket from McKenzie gave the Cyclones a 64-45 lead with 10 minutes to play.

The two sides traded baskets early in the fourth quarter as Bossert's jumper at 4:38 pushed the Centenary advantage to 72-49.

Escano's lay-up with 26 seconds to play closed out the 74-51 win for the Cyclones.

Centenary shot 46.4% from the field and knocked down a season-high eight three-pointers in the contest. Valley Forge posted a 32.8 field goal percentage and connected on six three-pointers. Centenary dominated the rebounding battle, 59-22.

Bossert struck for a game-high 17 points to lead the Cyclones. She also contributed six rebounds, seven assists and four steals. Jacobs added 15 points and eight rebounds.

McKenzie tallied 13 points and dished out a career-high eight assists with four blocks. Escano had her first career double-double as she finished with 11 points and 13 rebounds.

Rowan led all players with 17 rebounds and dropped in eight points.

Flowers and Newborn each had 11 points for Valley Forge.

The Cyclones are back in action on Sunday, Dec. 1 when they open Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play by traveling to Wilson for a 1 p.m. game.
