Jacobs Powers Women's Basketball to Third Straight Win, 71-43 at Wilson

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. – Sophomore Victoria Jacobs scored a career-high 24 points to lead the Centenary University women's basketball team to a 71-43 win at Wilson College in the Cyclones' Colonial State Athletic Conference (CSAC) opener on Thursday afternoon.

Jacobs was one of 11 Cyclones to score at least two points in a win that stretched the squad's current win streak to three straight games.

"Once we settled in we did a nice job following the defensive scout and being patient on the offensive end," said head coach Rose Haller. "Everyone contributed for us today."

The Cyclones jumped out to a quick 6-2 lead as Jacobs connected on a lay-up at 6:04 of the first quarter.

Wilson responded and scored 13 of the next 16 points and took a 15-9 advantage with 2:01 showing on the clock. Michaela Singer had five points during that run.

Centenary scored the final seven points of the period, including a lay-up from freshman Carmen Escano at the buzzer, for a 16-15 lead after 10 minutes of play.

The two teams traded points to start the second quarter as a pair of free throws from Wilson's Samira Murphy tied the game at 19-19 with 8:27 to go until the half.

Centenary responded with a 7-0 run and took a 26-19 lead with 3:19 showing on the clock. Escano had a pair of baskets during that scoring spurt.

The Cyclones and Phoenix continued to battle as a traditional three-point play from sophomore Taylor Bossert with 30 seconds to go sent the Cyclones into the half with a 31-24 edge.

Centenary came out firing to start the third quarter. The Cyclones put the first 19 points of the quarter on the board and pushed their lead in the game to 50-24. Jacobs struck for 12 of the 19 during that stretch.

Buckets from freshmen Emerald Richard and Kayla Burnett in the final two minutes helped the Cyclones take a 54-26 lead through three periods of play.

The two teams battled to start the fourth quarter as freshman Janne Rowan's jumper at 5:02 pushed the Centenary advantage to 63-29.

A jumper from freshman Zaniera James put the visitors on top, 69-34 with 2:32 to go in the contest.

The two squads traded points down the stretch as the Cyclones claimed the 71-43 win.

Centenary shot 51.7 percent from the floor and made six three-pointers. Wilson posted a 30.4 field goal percentage and connected on four three-pointers. Centenary dominated the rebounding battle, 51-25.

In addition to being a career-high, Jacobs' 24 points were the most by a Cyclone since Nicole Cartino scored 27 against Cedar Crest during the 2017-18 season. Jacobs added three rebounds and three steals in the contest.

Escano came off the bench to post her second straight double-double for the Cyclones with 10 points and 15 rebounds. Bossert had nine points while sophomore Jessica McKenzie had eight points, seven rebounds and five assists.

Singer led Wilson with nine points and four steals.

The Cyclones are back in action on Wednesday, Dec. 11 when they host the College of Saint Elizabeth at 7 p.m.
