DELHI, N.Y. – Sophomore
Victoria Jacobs and
Carly Tarnowski combined for 35 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Centenary University women's basketball team to a 68-49 win over SUNY Delhi on Saturday afternoon.
"We showed in spurts today the team we can be," said head coach
Rose Haller. "Now we have to work to be that team more consistently."
Trailing 8-6 with 4:31 to go in the first quarter, Centenary went on a 12-5 run and took a 18-11 lead after 10 minutes of play. Jacobs tossed in half of the Cyclone points during that scoring spurt.
Sophomore
Jessica McKenzie scored the first six points of the second quarter and pushed the Centenary lead to 24-11 with 8:39 to go before the half.
The two teams continued to battle as a lay-up from Tarnowski at 4:46 extended the Centenary lead to 28-13.
The Cyclones and Broncos traded baskets over the final four minutes of the period as the visitors took a 34-24 lead at the half.
The third quarter saw both teams go back-and-forth as SUNY Delhi cut the Centenary lead to seven, 38-31 with 3:54 showing on the clock.
Centenary held a 43-35 lead with 10 minutes to play.
The Cyclones started the fourth quarter strong as they scored the first 13 points and extended their lead to 56-35 with 5:53 to play. Sophomore
Taylor Bossert knocked down a pair of three-pointers during that stretch for the Cyclones.
The two teams traded points over the final five minutes of the game as Centenary secured the 68-49 win.
Centenary shot 45.8% from the field and was 11-for-13 from the foul line. SUNY Delhi shot 30.2 percent from the field and was 13-for-23 from the charity stripe. The Cyclones won the rebounding battle, 43-32.
Tarnowski paced the Cyclones with 18 points and seven rebounds while Jacobs added 17 points and three rebounds. Bossert finished with 12 points for Centenary.
Sam Acuna led SUNY Delhi with 15 points.
Centenary is back in action on Monday, Nov. 25 when the Cyclones host Valley Forge at 6 p.m.
