CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. – Senior
Tom Weiler scored a career-high 16 points but the second half comeback fell just short for the Centenary University men's basketball team in a 76-68 loss at Wilson College in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action Saturday afternoon.
Wilson had the hot hand in the first half as the Phoenix shot 38.89 from the field and knocked down seven three-pointers. That allowed the home team to jump out to a 46-26 lead at the break.
Wilson took a 55-30 lead in the second half as
Zachary Powell hit a lay-up at the 17:51 mark.
Six straight points from sophomore
Chris LaBelle made it a 57-42 game with 16:08 showing on the clock.
The two teams traded baskets as a triple from Weiler made it a 64-47 game with 13:08 to go in the game.
The Cyclones and Phoenix continued to battle on each end of the court as a 6-0 run by the visitors pulled the Cyclones to within 12, 68-56. Senior
Stewart Lester drained a three-pointer during that scoring spurt.
Wilson pushed its lead back to 11, 74-63 with 1:56 showing on the clock.
Centenary scored the next five points and cut the lead to six, 74-68.
A pair of late free throws sealed a 76-68 win for the Phoenix.
Wilson finished the game shooting 40 percent from the field and made 10 three-pointers. The Phoenix went 14-for-25 from the foul line. Centenary shot 37.3 percent from the field and connected on five three-pointers. The Cyclones were 13-for-22 from the charity stripe. Wilson held a 48-32 advantage in the rebounding battle.
In addition to Weiler's 16 points, the Cyclones got 13 points from sophomore
Emmanuel Doh and 11 points each from LaBelle and freshman
Divine Anderson.
Keion Adams finished with 27 points and 13 rebounds to lead Wilson.
The Cyclones are back in action on Thursday, Jan. 10 when they host Rosemont at 8 p.m.
