BALTIMORE, Md. – Junior
Dayna Wich made a lay-up and a free throw with one second to play, which lifted the Centenary University women's basketball team to a 57-54 win at Notre Dame of Maryland on Saturday afternoon in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action.
Wich and sophomore
Danika Brandt combined for 28 points in the game to lead the Cyclones to their third straight win.
The Cyclones quickly jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first quarter as Brandt made a jumper at 5:38.
The Gators responded by scoring 11 of the next 13 points in the contest and took an 11-8 lead with 2:07 showing on the clock.
Adrianna Fletcher had a pair of three-pointers for the Gators during that stretch.
Notre Dame pushed its lead to 13-8 on a lay-up from
Vanessa Dunn with 57 seconds to go in the stanza.
A jumper from freshman
Meghan Barone as time expired in the first quarter pulled the Cyclones to within two, 13-11.
Freshman
Jessica McKenzie connected on a jumper to start the second quarter and tied the game at 13-13.
The two teams traded points as a pair of free throws from Wich gave the Cyclones a 16-15 edge with 3:31 showing on the clock.
A three-pointer from
Justine Walrath gave the home team a 20-17 advantage with 29 seconds to go until the half.
Freshman
Victoria Jacobs made a lay-up with 15 seconds left and Centenary went into the half trailing by just one, 20-19.
Dunn opened the third quarter scoring with a three-pointer that gave the Gators a 23-19 lead with 7:49 to go in the period.
That was the last points scored by Notre Dame in that period until the 2:50 mark. In the meantime, Centenary went on an 11-0 run and took a 30-23 lead in the game. Brandt scored five for the Cyclones during that run.
Another three-pointer from Brandt with 59 seconds showing on the clock extended the Centenary lead to 38-31.
That gave the Cyclones a seven-point advantage with 10 minutes to play.
Notre Dame opened the fourth quarter on an 8-0 run and took a 39-38 lead with 8:03 to go in the game. Walrath scored four points during that stretch for the Gators.
The two teams went back-and-forth before a 7-0 run gave the Cyclones a 47-41 lead with 6:32 showing on the clock. Brandt scored four during that run while freshman
Caitlyn Reyes knocked down a three-pointer.
Notre Dame responded with a 6-0 run of its own that featured four straight points from Walrath and pulled to within two, 50-48 with 2:16 to play.

Jaiseeta Hall made 1-of-2 from the foul line with 24 seconds to play and Centenary took a 54-52 lead.
Notre Dame called timeout and out of the break got a basket from Fletcher, which tied the game at 54-54 with 13 seconds to go in the game.
Centenary responded with a timeout of its own, Wich made the basket and sunk the foul shot that followed with one second to play, and the Cyclones claimed the 57-54 win.
Centenary finished the game shooting 36.4 percent from the field and went 13-for-25 from the foul line. Notre Dame shot 27.4 percent from the field and was aided by making seven three-pointers. Centenary pulled down a season-best 52 rebounds and outrebounded the Gators 52-43.
Brandt finished with a game and career-high 16 points to lead the Cyclones. She also added four rebounds and two assists in the contest. Wich contributed 12 points and seven rebounds while McKenzie had a team-high 13 rebounds and seven points. Reyes added seven points and six rebounds for the Cyclones.
Dunn led Notre Dame with 14 points and eight rebounds.
The Cyclones are back in action on Wednesday, Jan. 30 as they host Clarks Summit at 7 p.m. in Reeves Gym.
