ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Sophomore
Danika Brandt and freshman
Jessica McKenzie each scored seven points in the second half to lead the Centenary University women's basketball team to a 51-47 comeback win at Cedar Crest College on Wednesday night in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action.
Cedar Crest jumped out to a quick 7-2 lead as
Joana Cainglet hit a lay-up at 7:23 of the first quarter. The Falcons pushed their lead to 11-4 as
Meghan Gregory connected for a bucket at 4:47.
Centenary closed the first quarter on an 11-7 run and cut the Cedar Crest lead to 18-15. Freshman
Taylor Bossert contributed eight points during that scoring spurt for the Cyclones.
Cedar Crest opened the second quarter on a 7-0 run and pushed its lead to 25-15 with 6:57 to go before the half.
McKenzie got the Cyclones on the board with a jumper at 5:57. The two teams went back-and-forth as a traditional three-point play from McKenzie and a lay-up from Bossert pulled Centenary to within three, 27-24 with 3:23 showing on the clock.
The two teams continued to battle as a lay-up from Cainglet with 54 seconds to go in the period sent the home team into the half with a 31-26 lead.
The Cyclones and Falcons traded baskets to start the third quarter as
Mackenzie Borger's lay-up at 6:29 put Cedar Crest ahead 35-28.
Centenary closed the third quarter on a 10-1 run and took a 38-36 lead through three quarters of play. Freshman
Carly Tarnowski scored four points during that scoring spurt while Bossert and Brandt each posted three points.
A lay-up from Brandt at 7:06 of the fourth quarter pushed the Centenary lead to 41-38.
A 8-3 run gave Cedar Crest the lead back, 46-44 with 5:14 showing on the clock.
Centenary responded by scoring the next six points in the game and went back on top, 50-46 with 1:33 to go in the game. McKenzie scored four points during that stretch. The two teams traded foul shots over the final minute as Centenary claimed the 51-47 win.
Centenary shot 37 percent from the field in the contest and was 15-for-28 from the foul line. Cedar Crest posted a 33.3 field goal percentage in the game and went 4-for-10 from the charity stripe. The Falcons won the rebounding battle, 44-26.
McKenzie posted her third straight double-double and sixth of the season for the Cyclones. She finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds in the contest while also adding two assists and three steals. Bossert contributed 14 points and five steals while Brandt finished with nine points after a strong second half.
Borger led Cedar Crest with 13 points and five assists.
The Cyclones will be back in action on Friday, Jan. 18 as they travel to Keystone for a 6 p.m. game. That contest was originally scheduled for Saturday afternoon but was moved due to the potential for winter weather on Saturday.
