WAYNE, N.J. – Junior
Brielle Gensinger had a match-high 11 digs as the Centenary University volleyball team fell in a road contest at William Paterson University on Thursday night.
"I thought
Storm Spooner was a key contributor in today's match," said head coach
Kelsey Walter. "She really came alive and played consistently throughout the entire match. Gensinger ran the defense in the back row and gave us an opportunity to run our offense. The girls really gave a great fight. We are making progress and since we have a week till our next match, we are planning to make a few adjustments that we feel can improve our game."
The Pioneers jumped out to an early 4-0 lead and took the first set from the Cyclones, 25-6.
The second set saw the two teams battle early. A block from junior
Katie Alvarez and sophomore
Leandra Garcia tied the set at 4-4. That was the start of a 7-3 run that gave the Cyclones a 10-7 advantage in the set. Freshman
Amelia Rodriguez had a service ace during that stretch while senior
Melissa Krueger added a kill. William Paterson eventually battled back and took the set, 25-12.
The Pioneers closed out the match with a 25-9 win in the third set.
In addition to Gensinger's 11 digs, Alvarez contributed five kills, four digs and a block assist.
Alysa Toman led William Paterson with 13 kills.
The Cyclones will now have just over a week before they are back on the court. Centenary returns to action when it visits Pratt on Friday, Sept. 14 at 5 p.m.
