BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Senior
Melissa Krueger had six assists and five digs to lead the Centenary University volleyball team in a nonconference contest at the Pratt Institute on Friday night.
The Cyclones battled hard in all three sets but ultimately fell to the Cannoneers by a 3-0 score.
Centenary held a 6-3 lead in the first set behind a pair of service aces from junior
Storm Spooner. Pratt responded with a 7-0 run and took a 12-7 advantage. Senior
Valentina Suizzo's service ace pulled the Cyclones to within two, 12-10 but that was a close as the Cyclones would get as Pratt took the set 25-13.
Centenary took a 3-2 lead in the second set but Pratt responded by scoring six of the next seven points and regained the lead, 8-4. The two teams continued to battle but Pratt took a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-16 set victory.
A kill from Suizzo pulled the Cyclones to within two, 6-4 early in the third set. The Cannoneers responded with a long run and eventually took the set, 25-13 and the match 3-0.
In addition to Krueger's contributions, the Cyclones got two kills and two digs from junior
Katie Alvarez and two kills and a service ace from Suizzo.
Shannon Corr led Pratt with 11 kills.
The Cyclones will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 22 as they host a tri-match. Centenary will open Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play against Notre Dame and also face Mount St. Mary. The action gets underway at noon that day.
