LANGHORNE, Pa. – For the second straight game between the Centenary University baseball team and Cairn University, it was a late rally that decided the winner. Five runs by Cairn in the bottom of the eight proved to be the difference as the Highlanders claimed a 5-4 win in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action.
The Cyclones struck first in the contest as junior
JT Valley led off the third inning with a single to left field. He came around to score on senior
Kevin Sensale's two out double to center field.
Centenary added to its lead in the fourth as senior
Michael Caprari led off with a single to left field. He moved to second on junior
Ryan Jasiecki's single and to third on a ground out. Caprari then crossed the plate on senior
CJ Lyons' sacrifice fly.
In the fifth inning it was Sensale coming through with another RBI double. His two-base knock, this time to right center, scored senior
Tim Maxwell, who had reached on a single.
Cairn put five runs on the board in the bottom of the eighth.
Nathan Wilson and
Brett Marks each had two run doubles before
Daniel Bierc hit a home run to left field.
Centenary got one of those runs back in the top of the ninth as sophomore
Cole Fratesi had a single to center field which scored Maxwell, who had reached on a two-out single. However, that was all the Cyclones would get as Cairn claimed the 5-4 win.
Nate Ross earned the win on the mound for Cairn. Ross tossed 3.2 innings of relief work and allowed just one run on four hits. Junior
Brenden Gerity took the loss after giving up two runs on a hit in the eighth.
Sophomore
Christopher Lilly earned the start for the Cyclones and turned in a strong performance as he gave up just two runs on four hits in seven plus innings of work.
Jacob Allen had two hits and a run scored out of the leadoff spot for Cairn while Wilson and Marks each had a hit and two RBIs.
Maxwell went 3-for-5 with two runs scored out of the leadoff spot for the Cyclones while Sensale had two hits and two RBIs. Senior
John Tierney and Caprari each had two hits in the contest.
The Cyclones will be back in action when they host Marywood University at Skylands Stadium in Augusta, New Jersey on Saturday, April 21 at 12 p.m.
