FLEMINGTON, N.J. – Freshman
Michael Vallario drove in a pair of runs for the Centenary University baseball team against Keystone College in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action on Thursday afternoon.
The Giants scored at least one run in each of the first seven innings en route to an 18-4 win over the Cyclones.
Leading 5-0 heading to the fifth inning, Keystone sent 11 players to the plate and scored seven runs. The big blow came in the inning from
Jandi Pena, who had a three run double.
Mohammed Hussein added a two run double as the Giants extended their lead to 12-0.
The Cyclones broke through for a run in the bottom of the sixth. Sophomore
Jon Fleck led off the inning with a ground rule double and came around to score as senior
John Tierney legged out an infield single.
Keystone pushed its lead to 14-1 with single runs in the top of the sixth and top of the seventh.
Centenary struck for three runs in the bottom of the eight. Freshman
Jake Altamore's RBI single scored Tierney, who had led off the inning with a single. After the Cyclones loaded the bases, Vallario delivered a single through the right side that scored senior
Tim Maxwell and Altamore.
Keystone scored four times in the top of the ninth and claimed the 18-4 win.
Hussein earned the win on the mound as he went five innings for Keystone and gave up the one run. Junior
JT Valley took the loss for Centenary after giving up three runs in two innings of work.
In addition to his work on the mound, Hussein led the Giants at the plate. He went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBIs. Pena contributed three hits and six RBIs while
Bray Curreri finished with two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored.
Tierney led Centenary with two hits, a run scored and an RBI. Vallario and Altamore each recorded the first hit of their career.
Centenary is back in action when the Cyclones visit Neumann University for a doubleheader on Saturday, April 14 at noon.
