Katie Alvarez and freshman
Jessica McKenzie each had 19 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Centenary University women's basketball team to a 67-55 win at Bryn Athyn College on Wednesday night in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play.
Bryn Athyn opened up an 8-2 lead in the first quarter as
Allie Warren connected on a pair of three-pointers for the home team.
Centenary scored nine of the next 11 points and took an 11-10 lead with 3:05 to go in the first stanza. McKenzie had a pair of jumpers for the Cyclones.
The Lions scored five of the final eight points and took a 15-14 lead after 10 minutes of play.
The two teams went back-and-forth to start the second period as Bryn Athyn took a 20-18 lead with 6:05 to go in the period.
Centenary closed the second half on a 14-4 run and took a 32-24 lead at the half. Alvarez scored nine points during that scoring spurt for the Cyclones.
The Cyclones scored nine of the first 11 points in the third quarter and took a 37-26 lead with 7:53 left on the clock. Freshman
Victoria Jacobs drained a pair of three-pointers for Centenary during that stretch.
A 9-0 run by the visitors pushed the Centenary lead to 49-30 with 4:19 to go in the period. Freshman
Taylor Bossert connected on a triple during that scoring spurt.
A traditional three-point play from McKenzie at 2:15 pushed the Centenary lead to 54-32.
Alvarez hit a pair of free throws at 1:17 which gave the Cyclones' a 23-point lead, 58-35. It was the largest lead of the contest for the visitors.
Lauren Beck hit a jumper for Bryn Athyn to end the third but the Cyclones led 58-37 with 10 minutes to play.
McKenzie connected on a jumper to open the fourth quarter as Centenary took a 60-40 lead.
The two teams continued to battle as Beck hit one-of-two from the line to pull the Lions to within ten, 65-55 with 16 seconds to play.
The Cyclones hit a pair of free throws in the final 10 seconds to seal a 67-55 win.
Centenary shot 40.4 percent from the field in the game and made five three-pointers. The Cyclones also shot 66.7 percent from the foul line. Bryn Athyn posted a 33.3 field goal percentage and made seven triples. The Lions went 12-for-22 from the charity stripe. The Cyclones held a 45-31 advantage in the rebounding battle.
Alvarez's double-double was her second straight and third of the season. McKenzie's double-double was the first of her career. Bossert finished with 11 points and six assists for the Cyclones.
Warren finished with 22 points for Bryn Athyn.
The Cyclones are off until they travel to the College of Staten Island on Dec. 30 at 1 p.m.
