Women's Basketball Falls in OT Heartbreaker at Staten Island

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Freshman Jessica McKenzie recorded her second straight double-double but the Centenary University women's basketball team suffered a 64-58 overtime heartbreaking loss at the College of Staten Island on Sunday afternoon.

McKenzie led a group of four Cyclones in double figures as she finished with 16 points in the game.

The College of Staten Island opened the game on a 10-2 run as Megan McEwan connected on a three-pointer at 5:36 of the first quarter. Each team scored six points in the final five plus minutes of the stanza as the Dolphins took a 16-8 lead after 10 minutes of play.

Centenary responded with a big second quarter as the Cyclones opened the stanza on a 6-0 run and pulled to within two, 16-14 with 7:58 left on the clock.

Trailing 21-15, Centenary went on a 10-2 run and took a 25-23 lead at the half. McKenzie tallied four points during that stretch for the Cyclones.

Staten Island scored the first five points of the third quarter and took a 28-25 lead with 7:53 to go in the period.

The Cyclones responded by scoring the next eight points and took a 33-28 advantage with 4:53 left on the clock. Freshman Taylor Bossert knocked down a pair of three-pointers during that run.

The two teams went back-and-forth as McKenzie's lay-up at 3:00 gave the visitors a 35-32 lead.

Another bucket from McKenzie with 31 seconds to go in the stanza gave Centenary a 40-34 lead. That proved to be the final basket of the third quarter.

The Dolphins opened the fourth quarter on a 7-2 run and pulled to within one, 42-41 with 5:42 to go in regulation.

A bucket from freshman Carly Tarnowski and a pair of free throws from junior Katie Alvarez pushed the Centenary lead back to five, 46-41 with 2:53 left on the clock.

The two teams went back-and-forth as Tarnowski made one-of-two from the foul line with 13 seconds to play to give Centenary a 49-47 edge.

McEwan connected on a lay-up with two seconds left to tie the game at 49-49. Centenary had a chance for the win but couldn't get the shot off before the horn.

The two sides traded baskets early in the extra period as Bossert's jumper at 2:33 gave Centenary a 55-53 edge.

Staten Island closed the game on an 11-3 run to secure the 64-58 win. McEwan scored five points during that scoring spurt for the Dolphins.

Centenary shot 41.7 percent from the field in the game and went 15-for-25 from the foul line. Staten Island posted a 38.1 field goal percentage for the contest and went 14-for-29 from the charity stripe. The Dolphins were 7-for-8 from the stripe in the extra session. Centenary dominated the rebounding battle, 47-30.

McKenzie added 11 rebounds to go along with her 16 points while Bossert had 11 points and two assists for the Cyclones. Tarnowski and Alvarez each added 10 points for the Cyclones.

McEwan led Staten Island with 21 points and five assists.

The Cyclones are back in action on Thursday, Jan. 3 as they travel to Wilkes for a 7 p.m. game.
