HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – Two first place finishes and five third place finishes highlighted a strong showing by the Centenary University wrestling team as the Cyclones hosted the 9th Annual Bob Quade Cyclone Open on Sunday.
The tournament, which featured over 190 wrestlers from over 15 schools and clubs, was named for the former Centenary Professor
Robert Quade, who founded the Cyclone wrestling and cross country programs.
Seniors
Christopher Muce and
Jordan Juliano each won their weight class after going 5-0 on the day.
Muce posted falls in each of his bouts in the 157-pound bracket. He took down his first opponent,
Alex DiLegge of Nassau Community College in 2:44. Muce needed 2:32 to register the fall against
Barry Boyle of Williamson and then he posted a fall over
Dylan Skidmore of Rowan College at Gloucester County in 4:38. Muce earned an 8-3 sudden victory decision over
Antonio LaRocca of Hunter in the semifinals. He then earned his first title of the season with a 3-2 decision versus
Elijah Murphy of American.
Juliano registered major decisions in three of his five bouts in the 174-pound bracket. He started his day with a 19-7 major decision versus
Avery Frank of Williamson College. Juliano followed that up with a 15-5 major decision against
Collin Stevens of East Stroudsburg. His next victory on the day came via a fall in 5:44 versus
Michael McCabe of Nassau Community College. Juliano earned a major decision by a 15-6 margin over
Alfonso Pinto, an unattached wrestler in the semifinals. He got a forfeit win in the championship match.
Freshman
Jacy Jones went 5-1 on the day to finish third in the 125-pound bracket. He started his tournament with a fall in 1:24 over
Michael Chiotis of Middlesex Community College. After getting tripped up
Jose Diaz of Franklin & Marshall, Jones bounced back with four straight pints to claim third place in his bracket. Jones needed 2:07, 2:30 and 3:45 to reach the third place bout. He wrapped up his day with a fall in 4:56 versus
Mathew Templeton of Hofstra.
Junior
Michael Foca registered wins in five of his six matches to take home third place in the 141-pound bracket. Foca had a fall, a sudden victory decision against teammate freshman
Cameron Bruffy, a major decision, another decision and a forfeit en route to his third place finish.
Freshman
Stanley Wojdylak continued his strong start to his rookie campaign by finishing third in the 149-pound bracket. Wojdylak in the top five in each of the last three tournaments for the Cyclones. A pair of major decisions highlighted his four wins on the day. He started his day with a 14-3 major decision versus
Rolando Rodriguez of Hunder and also had an 11-0 major decision against
Chase McCollum of Franklin & Marshall in the third place bout.
Senior
Alec Donovan became the fourth Cyclone to take home a third place finish after going 5-1 in the 165-pound bracket. Donovan picked up a pair of decisions and a fall in 1:32 versus
Alexander Michelman of Hunter before falling in the semifinals. He bounced back with a fall and followed that up with 13-6 decision versus
Tim Fitzpatrick of American to claim third place. Donovan picked up a pair of wins over Fitzpatrick on the day.
Freshman
Justin Hopman posted a 4-1 record to claim third place in the 184-pound bracket. He started his day with an 8-3 decision versus
Emmanuel Nchako of Lackawanna College and followed that up with a win by forfeit. After falling in an overtime period, Hopman bounced back with a 6-3 sudden victory of his own. He then secured his third place finish with an 11-6 decision versus
Jhavon Innocent of SUNY Sullivan.
The Cyclones will be back in action on January 4 when they travel to the Cliff Kean National Duals in Louisville, Kentucky.
