HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – Four starters scored in double figures but Wesley College held off a second half run by the home team for an 89-84 victory over the Centenary University men's basketball team on Wednesday night.
The Cyclones, who tallied a season-best 84 points, outscored the Wolverines 57-43 in the second stanza.
The two teams went back-and-forth early as a lay-up from sophomore
Chris LaBelle gave Centenary an 8-7 edge with 14:42 to go in the first.
Wesley responded with a 10-0 run and took a 17-8 lead with 10:43 to go in the period.
Brian Cameron had half of the Wolverines' points during that stretch.
The two squads continued to battle on both ends of the court as Cameron's jumper at 6:24 gave the visitors a 30-18 lead.
Centenary scored seven of the next nine points in the game and cut the Wesley lead to seven, 32-25 with 4:39 left in the frame.
Wesley closed the first half on a 14-2 run and took a 46-27 lead at the break.
The two teams went back-and-forth to start the second half as
Brandon Lewis' lay-up at 17:18 put Wesley up 57-36. It was the visitors' largest lead of the game.
Centenary scored 18 of the next 27 points in the contest and cut the Wesley lead to 12, 66-54 with 11:38 to play. Freshman
Billy Veras exploded for 11 of the 18 points during that stretch as he drained three big shots from behind the arc.
The two teams traded points as Cameron's lay-up at 7:36 gave Wesley a 75-59 lead.
Centenary used an 18-6 run to cut the Wesley advantage to just four, 81-77 with 1:47 to go in the game. Sophomore
Larry Joseph dropped in seven points during that scoring stretch while freshman
Divine Anderson also added seven points.
Wesley pushed its lead back to seven as
Evan Anderson sunk a pair of free throws with 28 seconds left to make it an 85-78 game.
Centenary scored six of the next eight points and cut the Wesley lead to three, 87-84 with nine seconds showing on the clock. LaBelle had five of the six points during that stretch.

Wesley shot 40.3 percent from the field and made 23-of-28 shots from the foul line. Centenary posted a 43.3 field goal percentage and was 16-for-26 from the charity stripe. The Cyclones held a 47-43 advantage in the rebounding battle.
Veras led Centenary with a season-high 25 points and nine rebounds while sophomore
Emmanuel Doh contributed 19 points and nine boards. LaBelle finished with 15 points, seven assists and three steals while
Divine Anderson added 12 points and six assists.
Evan Anderson powered Wesley with 32 points while Cameron added 22 points.
The Cyclones are back in action on Saturday, Dec. 1 when they kick off Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action by hosting Cairn at 3 p.m.
