LaBelle and Anderson Pace Cyclones In OT Heartbreaker Versus Cairn

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – Guards Chris LaBelle and Divine Anderson combined to scored 42 points and dish out eight assists as the Centenary University men's basketball team fell in an overtime heartbreaker, 93-89 to Cairn University on Saturday afternoon. It was the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) opener for both squads.

The Cyclones got off to a quick start as LaBelle's three-pointer at 15:37 opened up a 10-1 lead for the home team. LaBelle and freshman Billy Veras each scored five points during that stretch.

Another triple from LaBelle gave Centenary a 15-5 advantage with 13:30 showing on the clock.

Trailing 16-5, Cairn used a 19-4 run to take a 24-20 lead with 7:34 to go in the stanza. Julian Collazo had five points during that run while Jordan Koczman contributed seven points.

A triple from senior Tom Weiler and a bucket from Veras gave Centenary a 25-24 edge with 6:33 left in the first.

Cairn scored 16 of the final 23 points in the half and took a 40-32 lead at the break. Josh Decker had five points for the Highlanders while LaBelle scored five points for the Cyclones during that stretch.

The Highlanders pushed their lead to 10, 42-32 as a Richard Rosas lay-up at 19:41 accounted for the first basket of the second half.

Centenary responded with a 20-4 run and turned a 10-point deficit into a six-point advantage, 52-46 with 14:43 to play. The Cyclones got hot from behind the arc during that stretch as five three-pointers, including two from Weiler.

The two teams battled on both ends of the court as a four-point play from Anderson and a lay-up from freshman Samad McMillan pushed the Centenary advantage to eight, 62-54 with 9:41 to go in the game.

A pair of free throws from freshman Harrison Lucibello gave the Cyclones a 64-56 with 8:24 showing on the clock.

A 10-0 run gave Cairn a 66-64 lead with 5:09 left in the stanza. Collazo and Jeremiah Harris each had three points during that scoring spurt.

Centenary scored 11 of the next 16 points and took a 75-71 lead with 1:53 to play. Anderson, LaBelle and Weiler each dropped in three points during that run.

The two teams traded points down the stretch as a pair of free throws from Anderson gave the Cyclones a 79-76 ledge with 12 seconds to play.

Cairn managed to get a three-pointer from Harris to fall with two seconds to play and the two squads ended regulation tied at 79-79.

Cairn opened overtime on an 11-4 run and took a 90-83 lead with 1:46 to play. Decker connected on a pair of triples during that run for the Highlanders.

Centenary scored six of the next eight points and cut the Cairn lead to three, 92-89 with 27 seconds left on the clock. The Cyclones had a chance following a Cairn turnover but the three-point attempt would not fall. The Highlanders made one-of-two chances from the foul line with six seconds left to seal a 93-89 win.

Cairn shot 45.8 percent from the field in the game and made nine three-pointers. The Highlanders went 18-for-32 from the foul line. The Cyclones posted a 38.5 field goal percentage and dropped in a season-high 13 three-pointers. Centenary was a solid 16-for-20 from the foul line. The Cyclones held a 50-47 edge in the rebounding battle.

LaBelle paced Centenary with 22 points, six assists, five rebounds and two steals while Anderson finished with 20 points and two assists. Anderson scored six of the Cyclones' 10 points in overtime. Veras contributed 16 points and seven rebounds while Weiler posted 14 points and four boards.

Sophomores Emmanuel Doh and Larry Joseph each pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds with Doh adding five points and five assists and Joseph contributing eight points.

Collazo led Cairn with 23 points and nine assists.

It's a quick turnaround for the Cyclones as they return home to host SUNY-Delhi on Monday, Dec. 3 at 7 p.m.
