HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – The Centenary University wrestling team got a chance to compete in front of an audience on Saturday night as the Cyclones hosted their Public Eliminations meet.
The Public Eliminations featured 13 inter-squad matches that help the coaching staff determine who will be in the starting lineup when the Cyclones officially kick off the 2018-19 season on Nov. 3 at the Rutgers quad meet.
Prior to the eliminations getting underway, the Cyclones took a moment to honor
Josh Sibblies, one of the program's alums. Sibblies was the 11th All-American in program history and a three-year captain.
"Josh was known for his leadership and hard work ethic," said head coach
John Garriques.
Once the action got underway, freshman
Jacy Jones and junior
Bobby Demeter did not face a challenger at 125 and 133 pounds, respectively.
At 141 pounds, junior
Michael Foca defeated freshman
Anthony Cecere. Foca then suffered a tough loss to freshman
Cameron Bruffy.
Freshman
Logan Long took down fellow freshman
Stanley Wojoylak at 149 pounds.
At 157 pounds, senior
Jeremy Parkhurst slipped by freshman
Perry Maio. Parkhurst was then defeated by fellow senior
Chris Muce.
Junior
Jeremy Nurnberger got his season off to a solid start with a win over freshman
Haakon Mathewson at 165 pounds.
In the 174-pound bracket, junior
Alec Donovan picked up a big victory over freshman
Aidan Fernandez. Donovan was then defeated by senior
Jordan Juliano.
Freshman
Justin Hopman got his collegiate career off to a solid start with a win over senior
JT Valley at 184 pounds.
Senior All-American
Etiini Udott pinned freshman
David Oppis in the only match at 197 pounds.
In the heavyweight match-up junior
Jerold Goodman secured a win over freshman
Matt Angelov. Freshman
Phillip Green pinned fellow freshman
Shane Heslin for the right to face Goodman. Goodman pinned Green to close out the night's action.
The Cyclones are back in action when they travel to the Rutgers Quad Meet on Saturday, Nov. 3. Centenary will take on the Scarlet Knights at 10 a.m., Johnson & Wales at 11:30 a.m. and Fresno State at 1 p.m.
