Men's Soccer Closes Out Regular Season with 2-1 Win over Wilson

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – Freshman Chris Spataro's first career goal proved to be the difference maker as the Centenary University men's soccer team closed out the regular season with a 2-1 win over Wilson College in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action Tuesday.

With the win, the Cyclones closed out the regular season with an 8-8 record overall and a 4-2 mark in CSAC play. Centenary will be the No. 3 seed for the upcoming CSAC Tournament and will travel to No. 2 Keystone on Saturday, Oct. 27.

For the second straight game it was senior Josh Weiss giving the Cyclones the early advantage as he struck for his team leading eighth goal of the season just 1:42 into the contest. Weiss' tally was assisted by fellow senior Roger Fernandez, who dribbled a ball up the near sideline and crossed it into the front of the box for Weiss.

Centenary pushed its lead to 2-0 as Spataro made a long run and beat a Wilson defender and the keeper for his first goal of the year at 17:34.

Wilson cut the Centenary lead to 2-1 at 28:49 as Aaron Russ scored off a pass from Carson Tagner.

Centenary carried that 2-1 lead into the half as both goalkeepers were strong in the first 45 minutes. Senior Devon Warne made five first half saves and got help from defender Eric Nugent who headed another shot out of danger. Andrew Hetzer made seven first half stops for the Phoenix.

Both teams had their chances in the second stanza as Centenary logged 13 shots and Wilson put up eight but neither team was able to find the back of the net again.
Centenary claimed the 2-1 victory.

Warne picked up five more saves and finished with 10 in the win. It was his fourth game this season with 10 or more saves for the Cyclones. Hetzer logged seven first half saves for the Phoenix before giving way to Kieren Marshall who made seven stops in the second half.

The Cyclones will travel to Keystone on Saturday, Oct. 27 for the first round of the tournament.
