Abby Voelkner (Denville, N.J. / Morris Knolls) totaled nine points on eight goals and one assist, while fellow classmate
Priscilla Ortiz (Denville, N.J. / Morris Knolls) netted four goals as the Centenary University women's lacrosse team earned its first overall and conference victory with a 14-9 defeat of Rosemont College on Saturday afternoon.
Freshman
Kassidy Scheuring (Hampton Bays, N.Y. / Hampton Bays) recorded four assists for the Cyclones who improve to 1-2 overall and 1-0 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference. Jen South totaled a hat-trick for the Ravens who remain winless at 0-3 overall and 0-1 in the CSAC.
The Cyclones dominated the first half play with seven unanswered goals after trailing 1-0 to open the contest. Voelkner and Ortiz both netted hat-trick's as Centenary held a 7-1 advantage with just over 10 minutes to play in the first half. Sophomore
Nicole Soriero (Monroe Township, N.J. / Monroe Township) scored and assisted on a goal in the opening stanza, while senior
Korin Karszen (Manorville, N.Y. / Eastport South Manor) and Scheuring each added an assist as the Cyclones led 7-3 at halftime.
Voelkner continued to shred the Rosemont defense as she opened the second half with back-to-back goals that extended Centenary's lead to 9-3 with 27:44 remaining. The Ravens responded by cutting the lead down to 9-6 with three unanswered goals from South, Lynch and Costello. The Cyclones ended Rosemont's run with back-to-back goals from Ortiz and sophomore
Krysta Astengo (Clifton, N.J. / Clifton). Astengo's goal was the first of her career and propelled Centenary back to an 11-6 lead with 17:16 remaining. Despite Rosemont scoring another three goals in the final 17:16, Voelkner netted three goals of her own, all off assists from Scheuring, to help the Cyclones maintain their five goals advantage.
In the contest, Voelkner surpassed 200 career points and currently sits in fifth place on the all-time points list. Voelkner also added seven groundballs, four caused turnovers and three draw controls, while Ortiz totaled seven groundballs, three draw controls, and two caused turnovers.
Junior
Katie O'Connell (Nutley, N.J. / Nutley) totaled two assists, nine groundballs, and four caused turnovers while sophomore
Renee Hack (Old Bridge, N.J. / Bishop George Ahr) made four saves and scooped up four groundballs in 60 minutes of work between the pipes. Hack is currently just five saves away from ranking top five all-time in career saves.
